The Role Of Media In Fighting Illiteracy, A Case Study Of Radio 5 In Kiruhura District In Uganda.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was sought to examine the role of media in fighting illiteracy. A case

study of Radio 5 in Kiruhura district in Uganda, the study was guided by research objectives of;

examining the contribution of radios towards fighting illiteracy in Kiruhura district, analyzing

the magnitude of radio accessibility to the community in Kiruhura district. And to find out how

media incites learning in Kiruhura district. This was accomplished using primary and secondary

data sought sources such as Journals, reports, publications from media, periodicals, newspapers

questionnaires, interview guide which were found in Kampala International University Library,

Public Libraries Internet surfing and respondents from Kiruhura district. The findings revealed

that there was a positive link between media and illiteracy in Kiruhura district. For instance, the

findings revealed that media to a larger extent contributed to 60% in fighting illiteracy in

Kiruhura district. Therefore, in order to yield and keep up the full benefits of media, radio five

policy makers, marketing managers should properly channel the resources so as not to be

misused, proper channels of advertising should be used (such as Television, Radios electronic,

News Papers and electronic billboards) to alert and inform the public about its programs so as to

maintain listeners hence fighting illiteracy in Kiruhura District.
