Understanding Attitudes Towards Mathematics: A Descriptive Study of Preparatory Stage Students

Students positive attitude towards mathematics determines their success in learning it. The teachers teaching approaches and the school environment play a great role in their learning mathematics. The purpose of this study is to find out how students feel about learning mathematics in their classrooms. The descriptive study is conducted in Hyderabad with a sample of 107 students from Kendriya Vidyalaya studying in class 5. A simple random probability sampling technique is used. A 3-point Likert scale questionnaire comprising 35 items (alpha = 0.77) is used to collect data from the respondents. Means, standard deviation, and chi-square tests were used to analyse the data. The result is that there is no association between the attitudes of boys and girls towards learning mathematics. 67 per cent of students show that they have an average attitude towards learning mathematics. 19 per cent of the students have a high attitude towards learning mathematics, and the remaining 14 per cent of the students show a low attitude towards learning mathematics. Hence, it is recommended that the attitude of preparatory students is influenced by the teacher's attitude, personality, teaching technique, and strategies in the classroom, which should be enhanced so that students develop a positive interest, attitude, and motivation to learn mathematics.
