Universal Basic Income & Inheritance Tax: A Modern Response to the Problem of Distributive Injustice in Contemporary South Africa

Abstract: This paper examines the idea of a system of Universal Basic Income (UBI), along with inheritance tax, as a response to the problem of distributive injustice in contemporary South Africa. The focus will be on the works of Lafaye, who advocates for a reform of inheritance tax, and Van Parijs, who synthesizes the central case for basic income as a strategy against both poverty and unemployment. By merging certain components of these works, I argue that a system of Universal Basic Income (UBI), along with inheritance tax, has the potential to decrease poverty and equalize opportunities whilst promoting individual freedom, which are both redistributive and egalitarian yet liberty and autonomy promoting propositions.

Key words: Universal Basic Income; Inheritance Tax; Distributive Justice; Lafaye; Van Parijs.
