ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the effect of cement dust administration on blood glucose and cholesterol level in fasted male Wistar rats. Twenty four male Wistar rats weighing between 158-204g were used for this study. The animals were randomly divided into four groups comprising six rats each. Group 1 was the control group with no cement dust administered at all while Group2, 3 and 4 are the low dose (25g), medium dose (50g)and high dose (100g) cement dust administration group respectively. After 21 days, the blood glucose level was measured using Accu-chek glucometer in a fasting state and blood samples were collected from intra-orbital sinus. Cholesterol level was determined from serum obtained from blood sample with Agappe Diagnostic kits using laboratory techniques.

The result showed a significant increase in blood glucose level between low dose (25g) and high dose (100g) cement groups compared to control while there was an increase but no significant change between medium dose (50g) cement groups compared to the control. The results also showed a decrease in the low dose (25g), medium dose (50g) and high dose (100g) but no significant change when compared with the control group. The result of this study showed that cement dust increases blood glucose level and decreases cholesterol level in male Wistar rats.
