Bio-Prospecting for Insecticidal Scorpion Venoms and Identification of Bioactive Toxins

Abstract: Scorpion venom contains insect and mammal selective toxins. However, despite their significance and potential application in insect-pest control, bioactivity of Kenyan scorpions is still unknown. As such this study initiated investigations on the inherent insecticidal activity of the venoms of scorpions collected in Kenya. Venom from four scorpion species namely Parabuthus leiosoma, Parabuthus pallidus, Hottentotta trilimeatus and Hottentotta eminii was collected upon stinging a pa...

Identification of Semiochemical Mediating Root -Knot Nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) - PEPPER (Capsicum annum) INTERACTIONS

Abstract: Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) are economically important polyphagous group of highly adapted obligate plant parasites. They pose a substantial threat to crop production globally due to losses caused in a wide range of agricultural crops. To curb infestations of RKNs, several mitigation measures have been deployed to control these parasites but with minimal success. Alternative integrated strategies are therefore needed for management of these pests. A new strategy being explored at ic...

Synthesis of Montmorillonite-silica nanocomposite and optimization of adsorption parameters for Congo red adsorption

Dyes are used in various industries such as pharmaceutical, cosmetic, paper, leather, food stuff, plastics, and textile etc. The effluents are discharged into the environment by either water or land. The discharge of these effluents into the receiving environments results in hazardous health problems as most of these dyes have carcinogenic effects on the living organisms. Congo red was removed on montmorillonite-silica nanocomposite from solution by adsorption process. The percentage yield wa...

Unusual adsorption-induced phase transitions in a pillared-layered copper ethylenediphosphonate with ultrasmall channels

In this work, we thoroughly assess the CO2 adsorption behaviour of a recently reported, pillared-layered CuII ethylenediphosphonate of formula Cu2(H2O)1.7(O3P–C2H4–PO3)1.5H2O (Cu-EtP), that features narrow channel-like pores (diameter o 5 Å). Once the metal coordinated H2O molecules are removed, Cu-EtP features a very high density of open metal sites (0.0188 sites Å-3) and can adsorb a significant amount of CO2 at saturation (2.9 mmol g-1, 6.9 mmol cm-3). Most interesting, it displays a...

GC-MS ANALYSIS OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS PRESENT IN METHANOL LEAF EXTRACT OF Xylopia aethiopica Linn

Plants have been utilized for medicinal reasons since the dawn of time. Pharmacologists and organic chemists have synthesized a wide range of intriguing chemical compounds from medicinal plants in recent decades, which have shown to be quite useful in the practice of optometry and medicine. There is now an increase in global demand for the use of herbal medicines due to enhanced laboratory research and the pharmacological characteristics of bioactivities from natural sources and their potenti...

Synthesis and Characterization of Transition Metal Complex with Pyridl Based Schiff Base as Ligands

Abstract The pyridyl based Schiff base ligands from 2-aminopyridine and benzaldehyde and 2-aminopyridine and 2, 4-dihydroxylbenzaldehyde were synthesized by: 1. For Schiff base from 2-aminopyridine and benzaldehyde; Distillation of Benzaldeyde to ensure maximum purity from possible contaminant like water and ammonia, and refluxed with freshly prepared 2-aminopyridine. The refluxing was done with ethanoic acid catalyst at a time and without catalyst. The process was followed up with Thin Lay...

New Advancement on Nanotechnology

Smaller structures with sizes ranging from 0.1 to 100 nm are studied in nanotechnology. The pharmaceutical industry is about to undergo a great change as a result of this specialty. It covers various fields such as biophysics, molecular biology, biotechnology, as well as subfields of medicine such as cardiology, ophthalmology, endocrinology, oncology, and immunology. New drug delivery systems are being developed by pharmacies to overcome the shortcomings of conventional methods. This Seminar ...

Improvement of the magnetoelectric response in NiFe2O4-Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 composites using LiNbO3 as sintering additive

Magnetoelectric (NiFe2O4)0.3-(Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6)0.7 composites with addition of LiNbO3 as sintering additive were prepared by a classical mixed-oxide method. XRD patterns of ceramics sintered between 1000 and 1200 ◦C show the desired Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 and NiFe2O4 phases. SEM investigations confirm the 0–3 connectivity of the composite ceramics. The addition of 10 and 20 mol% LiNbO3 improves the densification of the composite ceramics and leads to an increase of the size of the Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6...

Determination of Melting Point of Vegetable Oils and Fats by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) Technique

SUMMARY Determination of melting point of vegetable oils and fats by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. Melting point of fats is used to characterize oils and fats and is related to their physical properties, such as hardness and thermal behaviour. The present work shows the utilization of DSC technique on the determination of melting point of fats. In a comparison with softening point (AOCS method Cc 3-25), DSC values were higher than those obtained by AOCS method. It has occ...

Quality evaluation and antimicrobial activities of Adzuki bean seed oil (vigina Angularis)

ABSTRACT The crude oil extracted from Adzuki bean oil (Vigna Angularis), purchased from Owo in Oba market in Owo local government area of Ondo state Nigeria. The extraction of the oil from the seed was carried out by soxhlet method using hexane as the extractant. The physicochemical properties of the oil were determined using gas chromatography (GC) and other standard methods. The antimicrobial activities were carried out using five species of bacterial. The results of the investigation is a...

Cannabis sativa seed flour

Abstract The hemp (Cannabis sativa) used for this work were obtained in a farm at Ogbese in Owo Local Government of Ondo State Nigeria. They were prepared for use by decoating, sun drying and milling. The milled sample were subdivided into two portions, one portion was defatted and named as defatted sample using normal hexane while the other portion was left raw. The samples were powdered in willey mill 60 mesh sizes and stored in screw cap bottle at room temperature for further analysis...

Biochemical Characteristics of the Hemp (Cannabis sativa) Seed Oil

Abstract The Cannabis sativa seed (India hemp) used for this work were obtained in a farm land at Ogbese in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State Nigeria. The seed were prepared for use by decorating, and milling and sun drying. A soxhlet 0.01%), acid value (9.75±0.025), saponification value (2.65±0.15 mg/g/KOH), peroxide value (85±0.01 mg/kg), iodine value (110.00±0.25 wij) and the yield percentage is 35/05% respectively. The extractor was used and hexane was used as solvent, which wa...

NEW MULTI-TARGET DIRECTED p-NITROPHENYL HYDRAZONES; CONCEPTION, DESIGN, SYNTHESIS, IN-VIVO ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EVALUATION, AND IN-SILICO STUDIES AGAINST COX-2, 5-LOX, AND H+/K+ ATPASE

Abstract NSAIDs and coxibs are associated with serious gastroinstestinal and cardiovascular side effects on their long term usage. Five hydrazones having chloro, methoxy, and nitro group substitutions were designed following a patent and extensive literature review. The designed compounds were evaluated in-silico for their pharmacokinetic and toxicity profile. Synthesis of the hydrazones was achieved through mechanochemistry (solvent-free) and conventional methods. Structures of the synthesiz...
