Abstract

Elemental bismuth has been reported to exhibit antimicrobial activity, but it does so only at relatively high millimolar concentrations due to its limited solubility in water. However, its solubility can be increased upon chelation with other materials like curcumin thereby increasing its potential as antimicrobial agent even at much more lower concentration. In this study, a novel Bismuth nanoparticless were prepared from non-toxic curcumin as stabilizing and capping agent to eliminate cytotoxicity. The samples were characterized using a FT-IR and Uv-Visible Spectrophotometer and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that curcumin coated bismuth nanoparticles were stable, non-toxic and also an effective antibacterial activity against E. coli and S.aureus.
