ABSTRACT

The level of Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in fish and sediments of Rivers

within the Kaduna South Jndustrial Zone were determined by flam e atomic

absorption spectrophotometry. The HN03 - I-1202 digestion.... s ystem was used

to digest the fish sample far trace m etals det ermination. Tire HN03 - H202

digestion method gave good recoveries which vCiries within 80-95 % for

Cd, 85-97% for Co, 81-99% for Cu, 79-97% for Mn, 81-93% for Ni, 87-

98% for Pb Clnd 77 - 98% for Zn in a fish smnple. The Clverage

concentration of m etals in the fish samples were Cd = 0. 3 + 0.1 , Co =

0.48±0 . 0 1 , Cu = 3.9+0. 3, Mn = 6. 5 ±0.1, Ni = 4.9+0.1, Pb = 0.3 .iO. l and

Zn = 1. 5 .i0.9. The order of these concentrations in the fish is Mn>Ni> Cu>

Zn> Co> Pb> Cd. The mean meLt! levels in the sediment sample collected

from the same locations were Cd = 1.5 +0 . 1 , Co = 6.6+ 0.3, Cu = 9. 5 + 1.4.

M11 = 32.0 + I O.l, Ni = 10.0 + 1.4, Pb = 18.4 +9.1 and Zn = 12.5 +4.3. The

concentration order in the scuiment su1nple is Mn > Pb > Zn > Ni > Cu >

Co > Cd. 1. comparison or tltc metal levels iu this stuuy area to other region

metals determined exhibited no discemable- elevation in concentration.
