ABSTRACT

The main objective of this research was to study the styles in swahili short story. We used two short story books which are; Pendo la Heba(1996) and Mayai Waziri wa Maradhi na Hadithi Nyingine (2004). In our research, we also outlined and discussed different kinds of styles. This are; similes, personification, imagery and symbolism. We also showed the expected effects of the use of these different kinds of styles in choosen short story books. We were guided by stylistic theory in our research. To get the expected data, we used purposive sampling in a way that it rhymed with the choosen literature set books. The data was mainly obtained in the library from selected text. The researcher also read books, thesis and other materials related to the topic of study. The researcher also used the internet to familiarize herself with current issues related to the study. Analysis of data was guided by the tenents of the theory mentioned. The findings were presented by descriptive method. Chapter one dealt with the statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions, importance of the study, the tenents of the theory, literature review and research technique methods. In chapter two, we also discussed the origin, history and the development of modern swahili short stories up to then. The characteristics of the modern swahili short stories was also explained at large. However, the tenents which build up the short story were discussed especially how it is relevant to short stories. Chapter three explained the use of imagery and its expected effects as used in the selected modern swahili short stories. Chapter four, analysed the use of similes, personification and symbolism in the selected short stories. Its expected effects was also discussed. Chapter five is the conclusion and summary of the research results. This chapter has also suggested research topics to be researched on in future.
