Pork Supply, Marketing and Challenges in Ethiopia

Abstract  The study was conducted to characterize pork and pork products marketing and challenges in Ethiopia.  Multistage  random  sampling  procedure  was  applied  to  select  a  total  of  40  pork retailers  from  six  towns.  Structured  questionnaire  was  used  to  collect  information  through face to face interview. Pork retailers were clustered into three categories as small scale (sell 10kg pork per  day)  based  on  quantities  of  pork  selling  ...

Smallholder farmers’ willingness to pay for commercial insect-based chicken feed in Kenya

Abstract: The cost of chicken production in developing countries is 300% higher than in developed nations. Overreliance on the key protein feed ingredients especially soybean and fishmeal (SFM) that are characterized by rising food-feed competition and supply chain impediments exacerbate the situation. The use of insect protein as a sustainable alternative protein source has attracted global attention recently. However, there is a dearth of empirical insights on farmers’ preferences for co...

Assessment of Cashew Nut Value Chain in Kogi State, Nigeria

Cashew nut value chain in Kogi State was examined in this study. Sample size of 200 respondents were selected using multistage sampling technique. Structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results showed that 82.1% of the farmers, 80.0% of the marketers and 56.7% of the processors were males. The average age was 50 years, 53 years, and 47 years among farmers, marketers, and processors, respectively. The results further sh...

Integrating Renewable Energy and Livelihood Sustainability: A Case Study of Decentralised Watermill Upgradation Policy in the Himalayas, India

Livelihoods have been a prime concern for rural areas in the geographically difficult mountain ecosystems of Himalayas. Watermills (Gharat) have been the lifeline of the people in these areas for time immemorial. They use water, the abundantly available Common Property Resource (CPR). The present paper deals with the watermill-based enterprise programme in Uttarakhand, India. The study collected primary and secondary data from various sources including watermill owners, household survey, FGD,...

EFFECTS OF INEFFECTIVE USE OF AUTOMATION IN MANAGEMENT OF LIBRARY SERVICES IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN SOUTHWEST NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF KDL AND UNILAG LIBRARIES

Abstract The study was on the effects of ineffective use of automation in management of library services in Academic libraries in Southwest Nigeria: a case study of KDL and UNILAG libraries. Library automation is defined simply as the use of computer and networking technologies in the library.Study  showed  that  the major effects  of  ineffective use  of  automation  in  libraries is  lack of efficiency in library services(48.0%);this is followed by slow pace of work in the library...

Effect of Operation Assessment on Performance of State-Owned Sugar Firms in Kenya

Abstract The primary goal of supply chain design is to improve service quality and interaction levels between service providers and customers. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of operation assessment on the performance of state-owned sugar firms. The research employed a descriptive causal research design to provide a cause-and-effect relationship between the variables. The target population comprised all four operating state-owned sugar companies, namely Chemilil, Muhoroni,...

Open-Source Self-Replicating 3-D Printer Factory for Small-Business Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing with 3-D printers may be a key technology enabler for entrepreneurs seeking to use disruptive innovations, such as business models utilizing distributed manufacturing. Unlike centralized manufacturing, distributed manufacturing makes the parts and products (the prints) at (or closer to) the source of the demand, cutting out much of the traditional supply chain. Although many expect 3-D printing to take off at the household level and previous work has shown significant r...

Waste to value: Global perspective on the impact of Entomocomposting on Environmental health, Greenhouse gas Mitigation and soil Bioremediation

Abstract: The innovative use of insects to recycle low-value organic waste into value-added products such as food, feed and other products with a low ecological footprint has attracted rapid attention globally. The insect frass (a combination unconsumed substrate, faeces, and exuviae) contains substantial amounts of nutrients and beneficial microbes that could utilised as fertilizer. We analyse research trends and report on the production, nutrient quality, maturity and hygiene status of ins...

Data to understand the biotransfer of heavy metals along the soil-plant-edible insect-human food chain in Africa

Abstract: Data on the biotransfer of heavy metals along the soil-plant-edible insect-human food chain collected along a 60km pollution gradient is presented here. These datasets consists of concentrations of eight heavy metals (Arsenic, Cadmium, Copper, Chromium, Iron, Nickel, Lead and Zinc) in the soils, in five host plants species, and in seven edible insect species determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). Datasets for the daily intake of metals and target hazard quotien...

Mobile Open-Source Solar-Powered 3-D Printers for Distributed Manufacturing in Off-Grid Communities

Manufacturing in areas of the developing world that lack electricity severely restricts the technical sophistication of what is produced. More than a billion people with no access to electricity still have access to some imported higher-technologies; however, these often lack customization and often appropriateness for their community. Open source appropriate technology (OSAT) can overcome this challenge, but one of the key impediments to the more rapid development and distribution of OSA...

Value chain and sustainability of mangrove wood harvesting in Lamu, Kenya

Abstract Mangrove forests provide harvestable wood and non-wood resources to human society globally. The current study evaluated value chain of mangrove wood products from Lamu, Kenya, and how these impacts on resources’ sustainability. Results show that, exploitation of mangrove wood products in Kenya involves several actors, including national regulator, licensees, cutters, transporters, stockists and the consumers. Based on the differences between allowable and harvest data, Lamu mangro...

Development of a Resilient 3-D Printer for Humanitarian Crisis Response

Rapid manufacturing using 3-D printing is a potential solution to some of the most pressing issues for humanitarian logistics. In this paper, findings are reported from a study that involved development of a new type of 3-D printer. In particular, a novel 3-D printer that is designed specifically for reliable rapid manufacturing at the sites of humanitarian crises. First, required capabilities are developed with design elements of a humanitarian 3-D printer, which include, (1) fused filament ...

Assemblages and Subassemblages of Giardia duodenalis in Rural Western, Kenya: Association with Sources, Signs, and Symptoms

Abstract Background. Giardia duodenalis causes sporadic or epidemic infections in humans. The parasite comprises assemblages A-H with A and B subdivided further into AI-IV and BI-IV subassemblages. Attempts aimed at linking these genotypes with sources and gastrointestinal manifestations of the infection are largely unexplored in rural communities. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, G. duodenalis infection was genotyped and associated with sources, and gastrointestinal signs and symptom...

A Logistic Regression Model Of Customer Satisfaction Of Airline

Abstract Evaluation of customer satisfaction differs from one study to another. Studies have been differing with their focus and coverage. Most of studies focused on evaluating factors influencing customer satisfaction or associate customer satisfaction and quality of services. This paper used logistic regression to develop customer satisfaction model for Precision Air. Five dimensions or variables have been considered: on time performance; aircraft safety; schedule integrity; on board servi...

Determinants of Income Inequality in East Africa: The Role of Gendered Foreign Aid

This manuscript investigates the impact of gender-focused foreign aid on income inequality in East Africa, a topic with limited existing research. This research adds value by providing practical recommendations for policymakers to enhance the effectiveness of aid programs in fostering economic equity through targeted interventions. Using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) on panel data from three East African countries for over a decade provides robust evidence that gender-sensitive aid...
