Flexural Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Beams Containing Polyvinyl Waste Powder (PWP) as Replacement of Cement

ABSTRACT The flexural performance of reinforced concrete beam specimens with polyvinyl waste powder (PWP) as partial replacement of cement is reported in this paper. Cement was replaced with PWP up to 50% by weight at intervals of 10%. The flexural parameters investigated were: the failure patterns, load-deflection characteristics, stiffness, and ultimate moments. The reinforced beam specimens used were 150 x 150 x 1000 mm, and tests were done at the curing age of 28 days. The results showed ...

Investigating Manure Potentials On Zooplankton Performances And Water Quality In Concrete Pond Culture

An inquiry on the blatant effectiveness of manure on zooplanktons and water quality in a concrete pond culture was reviewed within durations of twelve weeks. Zooplanktons were obtained using scooping net and water sample analysisdetermined using standard techniques. Result revealed a higher culture of zooplanktons using poultry manure than those from cow dungs: 10 zooplankton species belonging to Rotifera, Cladocera and Crustacea was recorded with Brachionuscalyciflorusand Brachionusleydigi, ...

Coefficient of friction

In developing processing machines for plant materials, the frictional property of the seed on structural surfaces of Mild steel (MS), Plywood (PW), Concrete (CC) and Glass (GL) is a parameter which needs to be measured. In this study, the static coefficient of friction of two Nigerian beniseed accessions (Yandev-55 and E8) were determined at moisture content levels of 5.3, 10.6, 16.1 and 22.4 per cent (wet basis). These were used as inputs into designing a beniseed oil expeller. A - 2 x 4 fac...

Service Learning in Engineering and Science for Sustainable Development

This short paper in the inaugural issue of the International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering explains how professors at all of the world’s institutions can capitalize on an opportunity to assist students to learn engineering and science more effectively by offering them a chance to make concrete contributions to the optimization of appropriate technologies for sustainable development.

Teaching Physics Using Appropriate Technology Projects

Appropriate technologies able to be easily and economically constructed from readily available materials by local craftspeople have a central role in the alleviation of poverty in the developing world. However, research and development of these technologies are generally apportioned relatively modest support by the developed world’s institutions, in part because the operation of many of these appropriate technologies is dependent on relatively well-under-stood science accessible even to int...

THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A SOLAR-POWERED REFRIGERATOR USING ACTIVATED CARBON 1 METHANOL PAIR

ABSTRACT A solar-powered adsorption refrigerator using activated carbon1methanol.pair was designed and fabricated. The refrigerator has three major components: collector, condenser, and evaporator. A 3 mm thick flat glass was used as flat plate collector. The condenser was made of spirally 'coiled copper tube immersed in pool of stagnant water contained in a reinforced concrete tank. The evaporator was fabricated from standard ' 15.6, rnm diameter copper tubing. The activated carbon used as ad...

EFFECTS OF AGGREGATE SIZES

In the sense that the materials involved in this project were capital intensive more especially cement, so in carrying out the work one must have to be careful in the selection and collection of materials to be used in the casting of the concrete. The materials used are coarse aggregate (granite) fine aggregate (sand). The coarse aggregates used in this work were collected from Ishiagu while the fine aggregate was collected in front of the carpentry’s workshop on the campus. The test conform ...

CHRISTIAN ETHICS: NOTION OF GOOD IN CHRISTIAN ETHICS

Christian Ethics is ethics which considers the specific situation, gathers the facts and uses the principles (commands and doctrine) and values to be found in Christianity. In this way, morality is used to describe our principles or convictions about what is right and wrong and our ultimate values. As seen in it, moral philosophy tries to study those principles and values, analyzing them critically and working out how we make decisions. Christian ethics also follow what is called “Applied o...

Waste management and treatment of copper slag BCL, Selebi Phikwe Botswana: review

Abstract: The production of copper bears both viable product and by product know as slag which is a challenge to dispose and poses a problem to the environment. BCL holds copper slag is seen as waste which is iron - opulent containing heavy metals which can seep into ground water and affect environment. These metal accumulate in millions of tonnes year after year posing as a threat to the environment and need to be managed to avoid them being harmful. This paper explores metallurgical ways o...

Biological shielding calculations for a 10 MeV Rhodotron electron accelerator facility

Abstract: This thesis focuses on biological shielding calculations for a 10 MeV Rhodotron electron beam accelerator operating in dual mode to produce a 10 MeV primary electron beam and 7.5 MeV secondary X-rays, generated by hitting an optimized tantalum-73 (73Ta) target with the primary electron beam. The first part of this thesis describes the Rhodotron electron accelerator and its oper ating principle. A model is presented for the transverse optics of a TT-100 Rhodotron accelerator. Potent...

The Role of Unused Swimming Pools as a Habitat for Anopheles Immature Stages in Urban Malindi, Kenya

Abstract: ABSTRACT. We conducted larval surveys in habitats located in urban Malindi, Kenya, in 2005 and 2006 with the goal of determining the productivity of unused swimming pools in relation to other habitats. Of the 250 habitats sampled, 66 were unused swimming pools, 93 were wells, 60 were drainage troughs, and 31 were miscellaneous areas, such as septic tanks, swamps, concrete tanks, fish ponds, car-track depressions, and drainage ponds. Anopheles gambiae s.l. was the only anophelines s...
