Abstract Genome studies in Australia reported a novel virus, Phasey bean mild yellows virus (genus Polerovirus; PBMYV), in mixed infections with Bean leaf roll virus, Faba bean polerovirus 1, Soybean dwarf virus and Turnip yellows virus naturally infecting phasey bean (Macroptilium lathyroides) (Sharman et al., 2021). Transmission studies with Aphis craccivora and by grafting with infected scions identified fabaceous hosts including chickpea, faba bean and pea as additional hosts of PBMYV (W...
Deplorable soil fertility characterising resource-poor agrarian communities remain a major constraint for sustainable global food security. Re-mineralisation through appli- cation of rock dust encourages maintainable productivity of degraded soils. This study was planned to appraise the effect of rock dust on root-knot disease of Citrullus lanatus caused by Meloidogyne incognita (Mi). The experiment was laid out in Randomised Complete Block Design with three replications. Soil and root popula...
ABSTRACT Duein-dibi-a nume (Funeral rites music) in Kalabari culture is a final honour for the dead and a status symbol for the living. It is performed for titled men, elders, members of Ekine cult and other socio-cultural clubs. Although duein-dibi-a nume occupies an important position in Kalabari culture, yet no musicological studies exist in terms of structure, significance and documentation especially as its traditional forms appear to be on the decline. This study, therefore, examined mu...
ABSTRACT The comparative evaluation of the bacterial and fungal diseases associated with Saccharum officinarum (Sugarcane) in ethnobotanical garden of Wesley University, Ondo was carried out through different microbial processes. The objectives of this work were to comparatively evaluate bacterial and fungal diseases associated with sugarcane in rainy and dry seasons, isolation and identification of bacterial and fungal diseases associated with sugarcane and development of disease inventory a...
ABSTRACT Schistosomiasis infects approximately 207 million people worldwide with 90% of the cases occurring in Africa. Kato-Katz, is the standard method of S.mansoni diagnosis, however it is characterized by low sensitivity. Another method of diagnosis is the antibody ELISA, which is highly sensitive but lacks specificity. The PCR test is 98% sensitive and 100% specific but it is costly for use in limited resource settings. The high sensitivity and specificity of the PCR makes it a useful gol...
Background: This study seeks to identify the prevalence of catheter associated urinary infection and the type of bacteria that are associated with this infection, as well as the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of the organisms isolated. This would guide the choice of antibiotics when there is catheter associated urinary tract infection. Method: From 1 November 2015-31 April 2016 a cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with urinary catheter in-situ. Urine samples collected were...

ABSTRACT African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease that affect domestic pigs and it is characterized by fever, blotching of skin, and haemorrhage of the lymph nodes, internal organs and the gastrointestinal tract. The prevention and cure of ASF will depend on management practices by farmers, observance of biosecurity measures, the immune system of the pig, and the control of secondary infections. This study was therefore, carried out to determine the knowledge and manage...
Persons living with HIV may succumb to acquired immunodefiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), which renders them susceptible to opportunistic infections. Several antibiotics are recommended for prophylaxis and treatment of the infections. These usage of antibiotics has lead to the development of multi drug resistant strains of Escherichia coli isolated from the gut of persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Such resistance is of great concern as the organisms may become infectious and also serve as ...
ABSTRACT The traditional instructional strategies employed by most physics teachers in teaching the subject has consistently led to low student achievement. Hence there is need to employ new instructional strategies such as problem-based learning (PBL) and interactive invention (IIS) instructional strategies, particularly, among the NCE pre-service teachers in Nigeria. The two strategies have been proved in the literature to help in alleviating the problem of low student achievement in physic...
Abstract: The removal of sulphates from acid rock drainage (ARD) using basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag was investigated. The results indicated that sulphates removal using BOF- slag increased with temperature increase (25-45oC), time (0-24 h) and solid loading (2-12 g BOF-slag/50 ml ARD). The maximum sulphate removal was 65% when 12 g BOF-slag/100 ml ARD was used at 45oC and 24 h residence time. Adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacities at 25, 35 and 45oC o...
ABSTRACT This work was designed to study the effects of Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma congolense infection on the renal function of mongrel dogs. Also, the effects of treatment of the infection with diaminazene aceturate were evaluated. Sixteen (16) male mongrel dogs aged between 3 and 6 months, and weighing between 2.5 and 5.2 kg were used for the study. The dogs were acquired, numbered, tagged and weighed. The dogs were kept in clean metal cages in a fly proof house and were fed once ...
ABSTRACT The present study was conducted in the Laboratory of Plant Pathology at the College of Agricultural Studies.Sudan University of Science and Technology- Shambat. To study the effect of water solvent extracts of Root, Brak and Leave of Mesquite tree ( Prosopis juliflora) and Fungicide REVUS top® on Wilt Branch disease , which is considerate one of most important disease that infectous Mango trees (Mangifera indica), and caausing significant reduction in yield. ABSTRACT This study provides information on the infectivity rate of Plasmodium falciparum on subjects attending University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Information on the use of certain preventive measures to control malaria transmission and also the need to keep a clean environment for more healthy living is given. A total of 200 subjects attending UITH were recruited into the study. Their blood samples were collected and analyzed microscopically for the ...
Abstract: As new viruses and new pandemics emerge we face the question as to whether our global health systems are well prepared to deal with them. Non pharma ceutical measures are a key control measure in the battle against infectious diseases especially in the absence of vaccines or when available vaccine quantities are not sufficient. The 2014-2016 West African outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) was the largest and most deadly to date. Contact tracing, following up those who may have b...
