Analysis of Settlement Expansion and Urban Growth Modelling Using Geoinformation for Assessing Potential Impacts of Urbanization on Climate in Abuja City, Nigeria

This study analyzed the spatiotemporal pattern of settlement expansion in Abuja, Nigeria, one ofWest Africa’s fastest developing cities, using geoinformation and ancillary datasets. Three epochs of Land-use Land-cover (LULC) maps for 1986, 2001 and 2014 were derived from Landsat images using support vector machines (SVM). Accuracy assessment (AA) of the LULC maps based on the pixel count resulted in overall accuracy of 82%, 92% and 92%, while the AA derived from the error adjusted area (EAA...

Alternative Routes for a Proposed Nigerian Superhighway to Limit Damage to Rare Ecosystems and Wildlife

The Cross River State Government in Nigeria is proposing to construct a ‘‘Cross River Superhighway’’ that would bisectcritical remaining areas of tropical rainforest in south eastern Nigeria. We offer and evaluate two alternative routes to the superhighway that would be less damaging to forests, protected areas, and biological diversity. The first alternative we identified avoids intact forests entirely while seeking to benefit agriculture and existing settlements. The second altern...

SPATIAL ANALYSIS FROM REMOTELY SENSED OBSERVATIONS OF CONGO BASIN OF EAST AFRICAN HIGH LAND TO DRAIN WATER USING GRAVITY FOR SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF LOW LAYING CHAD BASIN OF CENTRAL AFRICA

The Chad basin which covers an area of about 2.4 million kilometer square is one of the largest drainage basins in Africa in the centre of Lake Chad .This basin was formed as a result of rifting and drifting episode, as such it has no outlet to the oceans or seas. Bid Rent Theory

BID-RENT MODELS Introduction  Assume for a moment, we live a life of not having the knowledge of cities. Population are dispersed evenly, with population density equal in all areas. Transportation to work do not exist because everyone works from home. Exchange of goods occurs instantly and at zero cost, no matter the distance. This assumption cannot exist because we cities existing, exchange is costly and dense area stand alongside spares ones. The major reason of assuming a life without c...

AN APPRECIATION OF THE ECONOMIC BASIS OF PROPERTY VALUES

For an object to have value it must be scarce in relative to demand, i.e. it has to be limited in supply relative to its demand, this also applies to the case of properties. If an item is in high supply and there is limited demand for it, then ion an economic sense that object has no value. For example, air is useful for many purposes because it is in free supply, it has no economic value. Apart from being a measure of the relationship between supply and demand of commodities, value als...

The Relevance Of A Good Urban Design In Man-aging Urban Sprawl In Nigeria.
