Conversion of Waste Plastics to Fuel Oil

Abstract Waste plastic disposal and excessive use of fossil fuels have caused environmentconcerns in the world. Both plastics and petroleum derived fuels are hydrocarbons thatcontain the elements of carbon and hydrogen. The difference between them is that plasticmolecules have longer carbon chains than those in LPG, petrol, and diesel fuels. Therefore, itis possible to convert waste plastic into fuels. The main objectives of this study were to understand and optimize the processes of plasticpy...

AIR POLLUTION TOLERANCE INDEX OF SOME TREE SPECIES AROUND ELECTRICITY GENERATING HOUSES IN AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY MAIN CAMPUS, ZARIA, NIGERIA

The  study  examined  the  Air  Pollution  Tolerance  Index  (APTI)  of  seven  different  tree  species  growing around  electricity  generating  houses  within  the  Ahmadu  Bello  University  (ABU)  Main  campus, Samaru.  Four  parameters,  leaf  relative  water  content  (RWC),  ascorbic  acid  content  (AA),  total chlorophyll  (TCH)  and  pH  of  leaf  extract  were  used  to  compute  the  APTI  of  the  tree  species.  Results indi...

A Comprehensive Research on Preparation and Characterization of Corn Curbs Adsorbent

In preparation and characterization of adsorbent obtained from corn curbs, potassium hydroxide was used as an activating agent at ratio of 1:1, 7:8 and 3:4 with the corn curbs and their pH values were found to be 8.5, 8.03 and 8.0 respectively, ash content were found to be 41.56, 46.78 and 48.31wt%. The BET surface area values were 17.762461, 25.455146 and 201.54631m2/g respectively and the best activated carbon formulation arrived was 3:4 AC. INTRODUCTION   An  adsorbent  is  a  porou...

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF ICU/REHABILITATION ADJUSTABLE BED USING LOCALLY SOURCED MATERIALS

The focus of this project was the development of an ICU/Rehabilitation adjustable bed for the hospital and home environment. The project was initiated with the desire to develop an innovative, effective and inexpensive mechanism that would require an electrical supply. The design was performed systematically using various methods, procedures, techniques and materials to aid the process. One of the method used is carpentry, which was used to make the bed framework and the adjustable floor, whi...

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Case Study of Royal Dutch Shell in the Niger Delta

Abstract According to Nasin et.al, 1997: ‘CSR  issues progresses from a period in which the issue was thought of to a period of increasing awareness and expectation for action and then to a period when new standard for dealing with issues become ingrained in the normal functioning of the company’ This research work highlights shell’s CSR in the Niger delta region which has and is still facing a lot of issues which encompasses what Nasin et.al had stated. These issues began sub-conscio...

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION OF HAMMER MILL MACHINE

Processing involves conversion of raw materials into varied forms of finished products. It is carried out in different fields of science and engineering. Agro and Agro allied industry, food manufacturing, pharmaceutical, ceramic, civil engineering industries etc are involved in processing. The breakdown of large stones to an acceptable size for road construction is the business of the quarry industry (civil engineering). The grinding (milling) of clay materials for the purpose of production o...

Properties of Concrete with Coconut Shell as Fine Aggregate Replacement

Abstract Nowadays, the natural material as agriculture waste in concrete has long been discussed. Coconut shell is one of the most vast and readily available agricultural solid waste in many tropical countries. The properties of coconut shell are examined and the use of coconut shell aggregate as construction materials are evaluated. This study focused on the effect of coconut shell as fine aggregate replacement on the performance of concrete in terms of the mechanical properties and physical...

Compressive Strength of Concrete with Palm Kernel Shell as a Partial Replacement for Coarse Aggregate

Abstract Shelter is a basic human need. Unfortunately, decent shelter for the masses; the poor have not materialized over the years. The cost of concrete materials in building and civil engineering project has been a concern to the society. These and other things led to the research on Biological local materials that are dumped as waste in our environment, causing pollution and congestion as substitute materials. Therefore, this research work was carried out in respect to that and the researc...

The effect of rainfall on the quality of hand dug well water

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of rainfall on the physical, chemical and bacteriological quality  of some selected hand-dug well water consumed by students of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.  To this effect, six (6) samples from three (3) hand-dug well used, labeled (Ab, Bb, Cb & Aa, Ba,  Ca) indicating before and after rainfall respectively were collected and examined for both the  bacteriological and physio-chemical parameters. The bacteriolo...

ASSESSING HEAVY METAL CONCENTRATION IN SOIL OF FABRIC PRODUCTION VICINITY

ABSTRACT The study of heavy metal deposition and accumulation in fabric production vicinity is of increasing interest because of the awareness that heavy metals present in soils may have negative consequences on human health and the environment. This study describes the assessment of heavy metal concentration in soils of fabric production vicinity a case study of Itoku Adire Kampala market, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Five (5) top soil samples and 5 sub soil samples were collected rando...

Bearing Capacity and Settlement Characteristics of Soil: A case study of FUTO Senate Building & FUTO NDDC Hostel Area, Owerri, Imo State.

The sole purpose of this project work is to determine the settlement characteristics of soil for the construction of building, a case study at FUTO Senate Building  area  and FUTO NDDC hostel area, other objectives are the classification of the  soil, determination of the strength properties of these soils and also making of  sundry recommendations about the type of foundation most suitable for the  construction of buildings on these soils. Soil samples were collected from FUTO  Senate...

Corrosion Studies of Mild Steel in Biodiesel Obtained from Ghee Butter (Mann Shanu)

Abstract It is of no doubt that one day, fossil fuels, which the whole world highly depends on, will come to a halt in a few decades to come. To this reason, researches have been geared towards alternative sources of energy: biodiesel, a form of renewable energy (energy that can be regenerated once used up), is one that has been made known and being tested in some parts of the world. Due to the fact that biodiesel is hygroscopic (absorbs water readily from the atmosphere), as well as other fa...

Simulated Design for the Removal & Recycling of Acid Gases from Natural Gas

Natural gas is one of the major sources of fuel and raw material to industries all over the world. However, it contains some acid gases such as CO2 and H2S which are corrosive and harmful to the environment. These acid gases must be brought to permissible limits to promote safety in the operation and increase the heating value of the natural gas. In this project, we design an acid gas removal plant based on the amine treatment process using ASPEN HYSYS software.          In our propose...
