Prevalence Of Plasmodium Infection And Accuracy Of Diagnostic Tests For Malaria Infection In Children Under Five In The Health Zone Of Mont Ngafula1, An Endemic Area For Malaria In Kinshasa,

ABSTRACT Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the five countries that carry half of the global disease burden. Yet, malaria is an entirely preventable and treatable disease, when currently recommended interventions are properly implemented. Such interventions include confirmation of malaria diagnosis through microscopy or malaria rapid diagnostic tests (MRDTs) for every suspected case, even in children under five years of age. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of malaria infec...

EMOTION RECOGNITION FROM SPEECH: AN IMPLEMENTATION IN MATLAB

Abstract Human Computer Interaction now focuses more on being able to relate to human emotions. Recognizing human emotions from speech is an area that a lot of research is being done into with the rise of robots and Virtual reality. In this paper, emotion recognition from speech is done in MATLAB. Feature extraction is done based on the pitch and 13 MFCCs of the audio files. Two classification methods are used and compared to determine the one with the highest accuracy for the data set.

A Spatial Temporal Analysis Of Survival Among Tb And Hiv Co–Infected Patients In Erongo Region, Namibi

Abstract Namibia is among the Sub-Sahara African countries with a high burden of TB and HIV coinfection in the world. The interaction between TB and HIV/AIDS makes the diagnosis and management of the co-infection difficult. The purpose of this study is to identify risk factors, assess spatial and space-time clusters mortality among TB and HIV in Erongo Region. A retrospective cohort study from 2003 to 2017 was carried out using data consisting of 3145 subjects from all the 16 health faciliti...

Expression profiles of tsetse (glossina spp) glossina proteolytic lectin (gpl) gene

Abstract: Tsetse flies are important agricultural and medical vectors of African trypanosomes, the causative agents of trypanosomosis in humans and animals. The life cycle of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma, in its invertebrate vector begins when the tsetse fly feeds on an infected mammalian host. An important step in the establishment of tsetse midgut infection involves transformation of bloodstream-form trypanosomes into procyclic forms. This process is mediated by a wide variety of fac...

Plasmodial Infection and Haematological Parameters in Febrile Patients in a Hospital in Oyo Town, South-western Nigeria

A cross-sectional study on Plasmodium infection was conducted among 158 febrile patients (65 malesand 93 females) reporting to Oyo State Hospital, Oyo, South-western Nigeria. Parasitological andhaematological examinations of the blood samples were conducted. An overall infection rate of 29.7%was observed with parasite densities ranging from 96 - 64680 asexual parasites/µL blood. Thepercentages of infected male and female individuals were 27.7 and 31.2%, respectively. The least(12.5%) and the...

Cytokine profiles and antibody responses to Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection in individuals living in Ibadan, southwest Nigeria

Abstract Background: The ability of the host immune system to efficiently clear Plasmodium falciparum parasites during a malaria infection depends on the type of immune response mounted by the host. Study design: In a cross-sectional study, we investigated the cellular-and antibody responses in individuals with P. falciparum infection, in an attempt to identify immunological signs indicative of the development of natural immunity against malaria in Ibadan, Nigeria. Levels of IL-10, IL-12(p70)...

Assessment Of Levels Of Some Active Skin Lightening Compounds In Selected Facial Creams And Soaps In The Kenyan Market

ABSTRACT Cosmetics are generally used to improve the appearance by the removal or correction of blemishes and to treat diseases of the human skin and hair. Skin-lighteners which include hydroquinone, mercury, arbutin, kojic acid, ascorbyl glucoside, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate have been frequently used in skin lightening creams and soaps. Effectiveness Of Triple-Layer Hermetic Bags Against Aflatoxins In Stored Maize

ABSTRACT Aflatoxin contamination of agricultural commodities is gaining public prominence in Africa where it is pervasive due to favourable environmental conditions and high consumption of maize. Aflatoxins are toxic secondary fungal metabolites that contaminate dietary staples such as maize and groundnut resulting in adverse effect on food security, health and trade. This study evaluated the effectiveness of triple-layer hermetic bag to control aflatoxin in stored maize. A factorial experim...

SAVINGS, INFLATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH LINKAGES

The inter-relationship among savings, inflation and economic growth is an important conjuncture in the linkage evaluation of economic performance. Towards making them sustainable, the Nigeria government has initiated reforms, some of which in the last seven years. Despite these reforms, no study has been undertaken on the linkages among these variables with existing studies having confided themselves to looking only at the relationship between inflation and investment and the impact of in...

LEGALITY OF THE RESTRICTION OF MOVEMENT ORDER BY MR PRESIDENT By Mba Chiemela F

The Corona Virus has presented us with leaders making policies in order to curb the easy spread of the virus. One of these policies is the lock down by Nigerian Government, has this gone against our right to freedom of movement? Or is the lock down still within the ambit of law?

Influence of Oxygen Concentration on the Performance of Ultra-Thin RF Magnetron Sputter Deposited Indium Tin Oxide Films as a Top Electrode for Photovoltaic Devices

The opportunity for substantial efficiency enhancements of thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar photovoltaic (PV) cells using plasmonic absorbers requires ultra-thin transparent conducting oxide top electrodes with low resistivity and high transmittances in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Fabricating ultra-thin indium tin oxide (ITO) films (sub-50 nm) using conventional methods has presented a number of challenges; however, a novel method involving chemic...

IMPACT OF INFLATION ON NIGERIA ECONOMY

ABSTRACT Currently, economists seem to agree that high rates of inflation cause “problems,†not just for some individuals, but for aggregate economic performance. However, much less agreement exists about the precise relationship between inflation and economic performance, and the mechanism by which inflation affects economic activity.    Motivated by these questions, this research first examines the relationship between inflation  and economic performance in Nigeria by using da...

Development of Monoclonal Antibody-Based Assays for Detection and Differentiation of Trypanosome Species in The Tsetse Fly (Glossina Spp.)

Abstract Diagnosis of trypanosome infections in tsetse (Glossina spp.) is currently based on dissection and microscopic examination of different organs of the vector for the presence of infecting trypanosomes. This procedure is slow and labour intensive, and it is not accurate. The work reported in this thesis was conducted with the objective of developing a field applicable, monoclonal antibody (MoAb)-based assay for the detection of, and differentiation between trypanosome species in infect...
