Determining the Profitability of Different NPSB and Nitrogen Fertilizer Rates on Yield and Yield Attributes of Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) in the Midland Areas of Guji Southern Oromia,

The activity was proposed with the objective of determining the combined application rate of inorganic NPSB and N fertilizer that maximizes the yield and yield components of sweet potato. Sweet Potato variety Naspot-13, was used for the experiment. The experiment was arranged in factorial combination of four level of NPSB (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1) with four level of N2 (0, 23, 46 and 69 kg ha-1) in RCBD with 3 replications. The analysis of variance showed that the combination of 100 kg ha-...

An evaluation of the use of a microcomputer on a livestock farm

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of a microcomputer as a tool of information handling. Specifically, this involved developing software packages for use on an Apple II Plus microcomputer. The Willow Bend Demonstrational Farm in Union, West Virginia, was chosen. A farm records and budgets model was developed. Receipts and expenses from the Electronic Farm Accounting records were used to test the model for use by the farm operators in West Virginia. Enterpris...

Analyzing the Critical Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture and Food Security

This study explores the threats of climate change on agriculture and food security globally, focusing on Nigeria. Nigeria, as the most populous country in Africa, is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change on its agricultural sector. The research conducts a comprehensive literature review and synthetic analysis to identify the key factors that make Nigeria's food production systems susceptible to climate change. Nigeria's diverse climate, influenced by latitude, topography, win...

ECOLOGICAL STUDY of VEGETATION of ADES FOREST IN TULLO WOREDA WEST HARARGE ZONE OROMIA, ETHIOPIA

Abstract: A study was conducted in Ades forest in Tullo Woreda, which is one of the dry afromontane forests with the objective of documenting species composition and assessing species diversity, dominance, population structure and regeneration status. Vegetation data were collected systematically from 67 quadrants of 20 x 20 m (400 m2) along transects. In each quadrat, parameters such as density and diameter at breast height (DBH) for those with DBH>2cm were measured for all live woody speci...

MARKET CHAIN ANALYSIS OF TEFF (Eragrostistef): THE CASE OF DEJEN DISTRICT, EAST GOJAM ZONE,ETHIOPIA

Abstract: In Ethiopia, teff is one of most important crops in terms of number of producers and area coverage. It is the main source of cash income and food security crop for most of rural areas. Dejen district is well known in the production of teff in Amhara Region. This study was aimed to evaluate the efficiency of teff market chain and to identify factors determining farmers’ teff market participation and level of participation. A multi stage sampling procedure was used to draw sample p...

Pedological aspects of earthenware potterymaking soils from Kweneng district, Botswana

Abstract: Ethnopedological and pedological investigations have been largely centred on agricultural land uses and associated practices. However, indigenous peasants have also relied on soil resources to eke their livelihood in other activities including non-commercial pottery making. Clayey soils, weathered sandstone and other materials are traditionally used in the Kweneng District of Botswana for earthenware pottery. This study bridges the gap in the dearth of information on the pedologica...

Effect of thermal and alkali treatment on Pterocarpus Angolensis (Mukwa) wood flour

Abstract: Environmental friendly pre-treatment of fibre has been lately adopted by many researchers worldwide but not fully understood. Although various chemical modifications of fibre through several chemical treatments have been explored, but less has been done on lower sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentrations. This paper investigated the effect of thermalization at 115 C and lower NaOH of concentrations (1, 3 and 5) effect on mukwa wood flour as a way of minimizing chemical impact on possib...

Advances in nanoscale study of organomineral complexes of termite mounds and associated soils: A systematic review

Abstract: Termite mounds are replete with natural nanoparticles, and they vary in physicochemical, geochemical, mineralogical, and biological properties from the adjoining soils. Although termite mounds have wide ecological and environmental roles including soil formation, faunal and vegetation growth and diversity, organic matter decomposition, geochemical exploration, water survey, treatment of underground contamination, thermoregulation, gas exchange, and global climate change, their nano...

Influence of soil physico - chemical properties on indigenous soil bacteria in selected ecosystems at Palapye,Eastern Botswana

Abstract: Advancement of knowledge on soil microbial richness is a key to environmental policy and sustainable land management. In Botswana, there is a dearth of scientific reports on soil bacterial dynamics. The aim of this study is to improve our understanding of how soil physico-chemical properties influence bacterial abundance and distribution under different land-use types (ecosystems). Six ecosystems studied include saline soil, sewage sludge dump, garden, fallow land rainfed and irrig...

Trends and Development of Tourism Product Diversification in Botswana: Lessons Learned.

Abstract: Diversifying tourism products is a vital contemporary business strategy for maintaining a competitive advantage in the face of rapid technological, economic and social changes. Tourism in Botswana is largely dependent on wildlife and international tourists and consistent calls to diversify over the past four decades have greatly been amplified by the colossal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. A semi-systematic literature review analyzed progress and research trends related to touris...

Challenges related to beef-cattle pricing between a western block and a third world country

Abstract: This study considers a business scenario involving three participants. The first participant, in this case the farmer sells the cattle to the second participant, in this case the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) which, in turn sells the processed beef to the European Union (EU). The BMC offers a price, S1(t), to the farmer for the cattle. The EU offers a price, S2(t), to the BMC. To estimate the parameters spot prices of beef-cattle from the BMC and the EU markets for years 1992 to 2...

Suitability of Morupule fly ash as amendment for two agricultural soils in Botswana

Abstract: Electricity generation in thermal power stations results in high fly ash production that, if not managed properly, will be a potential source of pollutants. In Botswana, the fly ash from Morupule Power Plant is being as an amendment for agricultural soils through a series of experiment that characterized and assessed fly ash deposits as liming material and nutrient source; assessed the effects of fly ash amendments applied at different rates in combination with the nutrient so...

Characterization of soils in the Gamodubu landfill area in the Kweneng District, Botswana

Abstract: Understanding soil attributes guides arable farming initiatives in many countries, especially developing countries. In this study, soils of the Gamodubu area, in the Kweneng District, Botswana, were analysed to determine their suitability for arable farming. Soil organic matter (SOM) was estimated by determining soil organic carbon (SOC) times a factor. Five samples of soil were collected in the Gamodubu area for evaluation in the laboratory. There was positive correlation between ...

Plant-made HIV vaccines and potential candidates

Abstract: Millions of people around the world suffer from heavy social and health burdens related to HIV/AIDS and its associated opportunistic infections. To reduce these burdens, preventive and therapeutic vaccines are required. Effective HIV vaccines have been under investigation for several decades using different animal models. Potential plant-made HIV vaccine candidates have also gained attention in the past few years. In addition to this, broadly neutralizing antibodies produced in pla...

Lead pollution of shooting range soils

Abstract: A total of eight military shooting ranges were used for this study. Soil samples were collected at each of the eight shooting ranges at the berm, target line, 50 and 100 m from berm. In all of the shooting ranges investigated the highest total lead (Pb) concentrations were found in the bermsoils. Elevated Pb concentrations of 38 406.87 mg kg–1 were found in the bermsoils of TAB shooting range. Most of the shooting range soils contained high levels of Pb in the range above 2000mgk...
