Sustainable Petroleum in Ghana (Urea Fertilizer Production)

ABSTRACT Petroleum production causes a wide array of sustainability impacts, including a large share of global greenhouse gas and other emissions. It has also been associated with wider environmental and human rights impacts during drilling and refining, and occasional but destructive toxic releases from spills and accidents. This project aims at making petroleum production activities more environmentally sustainable, by finding a beneficial use of flared gases. Gas flaring is one of the top...

Using Ulva (Chlorophyta) for the Production of Biomethane and Mitigation Against Coastal Acidification

In South Africa the green macroalga Ulva armoricana is the main species of macroalgae cultured. The species is currently the largest aquaculture (2884.61 tonnes) product by weight with a corresponding capacity for biogas (CH4) production. We have shown that biotransformation of U. armoricana to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is viable and economically feasible as a clean fuel. pH toxicity tests showed that U. armoricana can be used as a health index, under potentially increased CO2 concentrati...

Impact of Heat Stress on Chicken Performance, Welfare, and Probable Mitigation Strategies

The poultry industry globally provides chicken meat and eggs, the most significant protein sources among animal foods. The industry is grappling with the effect of climate change which causes heat stress and harms the performance and welfare of the chicken. Heat stress has been the most significant environmental stress challenging the global poultry industry, as chickens only tolerate a narrow range of temperatures during heat stress. This review aims to assess the impact of heat stress on ch...

Analysis of the Awareness, Perception, and Adoption of Biosecurity Measures by Slaughterhouse Workers in Koinadugu District, Sierra Leone

Slaughterhouse workers are more susceptible to zoonotic disease infections from cuts and bloodletting, spreading blood-borne pathogens to societies. Adopting biosecurity measures by slaughterhouse workers in their daily tasks can lower the risk of spreading zoonotic diseases while improving food safety. This study aims to examine slaughterhouse workers' awareness of biosecurity, their perception of the efficiency of biosecurity measures in reducing zoonotic infections, and, most crucially, th...

Effects of Fermentation Periods and Drying Methods on Postharvest Quality of Cocoa (Theobroma Cacao) Beans in Ghana

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) contributes significantly to Ghana’s GDP and has made Ghana a recognized leader in the cocoa industry. However, there are myriad problems associated with Ghana’s cocoa bean quality. One such problems stems from farmers paying less attention to the required postharvest activities (fermentation and drying) which contributes significantly to bean quality losses. *is study investigated the effect of the duration of the traditional heap fermentation period and differ...
