Etiology And Control Of Bulb Rot Disease Of Onion (Allium Cepae L.) In The Eastern Region Of Ghana

ABSTRACT A study was carried out to assess farmers’ knowledge on prevalence, spread, control and economic importance of onion bulb rot disease in the Fanteakwa and Kwahu South Districts in the Eastern region of Ghana, determine the incidence and severity of the disease in the two districts and identify the causal organism of the disease and to develop a chemical control regime for management of the disease. Some local and exotic onion lines were screened for resistance to the disease. Eight...

An Assessment Of The Forest Regeneration Potential Of The Taungya System Of Farming In Oyo State, South-Western Nigeria

ABSTRACT Balancing forest regeneration and meeting food and fibre needs of Nigeria’s ever-increasing population challenges is imperative to her sustainable development. Two methods of artificial forest regeneration practiced in Oyo State, Nigeria to meet these challenges are direct planting and taungya systems. This paper reports the performance of the taungya system of forest regeneration in Osho Forest Reserve, Oyo State, Nigeria with a view to harnessing information for informed and effe...

Wood Energy Production Efficiency In Akinyele Local Government Area Of Oyo State

ABSTRACT A study was carried out to determine the efficiency of wood energy production in Akinyele Local Government of Oyo State. Ten fuelwood and jive charcoal wood species were selected as samples using availability as criterion. Energy parameters including moisture, ash and energy contents, and density of the samples were determined. The earth kiln system of charcoal production was used 10 determine the efficiency of the charcoal production method. Data analysis was carried out using a com...

The Soil Meiqfauha Of The Accra Plains

Summary Samples of soil have been taken from various situations at different times to illustrate the effects of season, water, sha.de, agriculture, disturbance and type of soil, on the soil meiofauna of the Accra Plains, It is shown that there is a significant difference both in numbers and in vertical distribution of the animals in different seasons and in different soils. Water is thought to be the most important factors as it is demonstrated that there is a direct correlation between size ...

Variations in the Wood Properties of TeminaIia mantaly (H. Pertier) Grown as Municipal Tree. in a Nigerian University

Abstract A study was carried out to investigate wood properties of Terminalia mantaly (H. Perrier), one of the municipal tree species in University of Ibadan, Ibadan.

Microbial Load, Cholesterol Levels And Sensory Quality Of Hard-Boiled Commercial Eggs

ABSTRACT Microbial flora and load, Cholesterol levels and sensory quality of attributes of hard-boiled commercial eggs being hawked along Lagos-Horm Road were monitored in this study. The bacteria isolated from the eggs include; Achromobacter sp. and Staphylococcous aureus. While the eggs sampled from Ibadan, Ogbomoso and Ilorin had lower microbial load (20 - 33 X 104 CFU/g). On the average a 56g egg was found to contain 235mg Cholesterol. The results of sensory quality evaluation showed that...

Effects Of Supplemental Methionine And Lysine On The Nutritional Value Of Housefly Larvae Meal (Musca Domestics) Fed To Rats

ABSTRACT The performance and blood composition of rats fed housefly larvae meal supplemented with, or without methionine and lysine or at high concentration were investigated.

GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION AND EARLY LIFE CULTURE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF FOUR GHANAIAN POPULATIONS OF Tilapia Guineensis (PISCES: CICHLIDAE)

ABSTRACT Genetic characteristics of four populations of the cichlid Tilapia guineensis were studied using allozyme (starch gel) electrophoresis and early life culture performance characterization to generate information on genetic structure and characteristics of major culture performance traits during early life of the species. Samples of the fish populations were collected from three freshwater reservoirs: (i) the Volta reservoir at Kpong, (ii) the Okye-Aminsa reservoir at Akotogua and (iii...

Adoption Of Animal Traction Technology in The Builsa District Of Upper East Region Of Ghana

ABSTRACT  The Builsa district is a peasant farming community. It had a problem of recurrent food shortage. The use of animal traction was one of the suggested solutions to this problem, hence its introduction in 1937. Reports suggested its low adoption. The study was to verify the veracity and the causes of the low adoption. A conceptual framework was developed. The concepts include: the farmers' sieve system, characteristics of animal traction technology and environmental influences. Adopti...

Genetic Variation In Height And Diameter Of Tamarack (Larix Laricind) And Their Correlation With Syllepsis

ABSTRACT Bayor, H. 1996. Genetic variation in height and diameter of tamarack ( Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch) and their correlation with syllepsis. 62pp . Advisor. Dr. R. E. Farmer. Key words: Broad sense heritability, genetic correlation, age-age correlation, tamarack, Larix Laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch, syllepsis. The broad sense heritability of total height, annual height increment, diameter, volume index and syllepsis of 11 provenances of tamarack in northwestern Ontario were examined. Ge...

Some Functional Properties Of Selected Ghanaian Cereals And Legumes

ABSTRACT This study was designed to examine'the functional properties of whole flours and starches of sorghum, millet, cowpea and bambara nuts from Ghana as well as Canadian wljeart. Functional properties tested on starches were the gelatinization temperature and range, and swelling and solubility patterns. The basic chemical analysis of flours determined and the functional properties tested were viscosity characteristics, gel strength and retrogradation tendency of flour gels. Gelatinization...

Technical Efficiency Analysis Of Groundnut Production in Ghana: A Bayesian Approach

ABSTRACT  Groundnut has been identified as the most important leguminous crop in Ghana both in terms of volume of production and export. Its production has faced numerous challenges over the past decades in Ghana as the productivity of groundnut continues to decline despite the abundant resources that support its growth. The question is, what then is responsible for the declining productivity levels of groundnut in Ghana? The study sought to estimate the productivity levels and technical eff...

Factors Influencing Women Farmers Participation in Extension Activities in Savelugu/Nanton And Tamale Districts Northern Region Ghana

Pathogenesis Of Endemic Burkitt's Lymphoma: The Role Of T-Cell Responses

Abstract  The mechanisms underlying the deficiency in cellular immunity to eBL and its development have not been conclusively investigated. This study sought to examine T cell phenotypes and responses in eBL. Participants recruited for this study included; 19 healthy controls, 21 eBL patients and 26 malaria patients, PBMCs were isolated from peripheral blood samples collected from participants and combinations of T-cell subset, activation marker (CD25, CD69, CD95, HLA-DR), IFN-γ-, IL-4- or ...
