Effect of Plant Extracts on Some Fungal Pathogens Associated with Groundnut Seeds Grown in Southeastern Nigeria

ABSTRACT Groundnut samples collected from commercial markets in South–Eastern Nigerian were examined for seed borne fungi organisms and their level of losses were quantified. Results obtained showed that only about 29% of groundnut seeds were without damage. This high rate of damage is a major factor in low viability of groundnut seeds in South – Eastern Nigeria. From the survey of groundnut seed cultivars, two cultivars: Spanish 205 (nwaerente) and Samnut 21 (Ngwongworo) were observe...

Analysis of the Profitability of Maize Products in Nigeria

ABSTRACT This study analyzes the profitability of maize products in Nigeria. It determines the socio-economic characteristics and processing activities of the processors; it identifies the various processed products from maize and then estimates costs and associated returns to maize processing. It also identifies constraints to maize processing; analyzed the factors that influence profit and investigate the specific effects of identified constraints on the processor’s growth potential of...

Optimum Cocoyam Densities, Time of Introduction and Poultry Manure Rates for Plantain - Cocoyam Mixture in Southeastern Nigeria

ABSTRACT This research was carried out to determine the optimum cocoyam density, time of cocoyam introduction and poultry manure rates for sustainable plantain/cocoyam mixture. The experiment was a 3x3x2 factorial arrangement fitted into a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 18 treatment combinations replicated 3 times to give 54 experimental plots. The experiment was conducted in two phases; the first phase involved plantain and cocoyam planted the same time in the month of ...

Some Phenotypic Characteristics of the Fulani Ecotype Chicken in three Selected Local Government Areas of Osun State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT Improvement of the domestic chicken has dominated efforts of indigenous breeders in recent times. Three hundred and fifty seven (357) Fulani ecotype chickens in Osun State were surveyed and assessed for their phenotypic and productive characteristics. Plumage pattern, thigh and shank colour, mature weight (kg), comb size, wattle size, breast length, breast width, leg length (all in cm); egg weight (gm) and clutch size were examined. Plumage pattern was more heterogeneous iI1 hens, w...

GROWTH PATTERN, REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE AND SEASONAL SENSITIVITY OF BOVAN NERA AND ISA BROWN PARENT-STOCK CHICKENS IN IBADAN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT Parent stocks (PS) of exotic hybrids have contributed immensely to commercial poultry production in Nigeria. Their continued optimal utilization depends on their performance test. Information on performance indices of PS layer breeds in South-West Nigeria is however limited. The growth, reproductive performance and seasonal sensitivity of Bovan Nera (BN) and Isa Brown (IB) hybrids were evaluated. Secondary data on 24 batches of PS of each of BN and IB kept over a period of 10 years (...

Effect of Day Old Body Weight on Growth Performance and Body Linear Measurements of Ross 308 Broilers

ABSTRACT An experiment was conducted on 126 unsexed commercial broilers (Ross 308). Birds were individually weighed and grouped according to their body weight at day old. They were assigned to three (3) groups according to their body weight (i.e. 39grams and below, between 40-42grams and above 43grams and above). Each chick was wing tagged and tag number recorded according to group. All chicks were fed the same diet and they were weighed at the end of every week. At eight weeks of age, the ...

THE EFFECTS OF STORAGE METHOD AND DURATION ON THE QUALITY OF JAPANESE QUAIL EGGS (Coturnixcoturnix japonica)

ABSTRACT The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of storage method and duration on external and internal qualities of Japanese quail eggs for three storage method(oiling, earthen pot and room temperature) and four storage durations (7,14,21 and 28 days) were used. A total of three hundred and ten eggs were used for this experiment. Eggs were collected daily then oiled and stored on a tray while some where unoiled and stored in an earthen pot and at room temperature (22-24°C) for ...

INCIDENCE OF REPRODUCTIVE WASTAGE IN IKOLE EKITI ABATTOIR

Abstract Limited infonnation exists on the magnitude of feotal wastage in slaughtered cows in Ekiti State. A six-months (February-July 2018) investigative study was conducted to gather information about the incidence of foetal wastage in slaughtered cows in lkole-Ekiti, Ekiti State. The total mnnber of cows slaughtered during the period was 908, reflecting an average monthly kill of 50 cows and daily slaughter of 3 cows from the three central abattoirs observed. The results reveal that at lea...

EFFECT OF SOYABEAN REPLACEMENT WITH LEUCAENA LEAF MEAL ON THE GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND CARCASS QUALITY OF WEANED RABBITS

ABSTRACT There has been a gradual increase of the price of feed resources from conventional protein leading to the inadequate supply of animal protein. Leucaena leucocephala (lam) is a leguminous browse plants that can be used in diets to replace or used in combination with protein source conventional feed ingredients. It's use has been imperative/ limited to a very low level of inclusion because of inherent anti - nutritional factor (Mimosine) which interferes with feed utilization and aff...

EFFECT OF INITIAL BODY WEIGHT OF GROUPS AND FEED QUANTITY ON LAYING PERFORMANCE AND STORAGE TIME ON EGG QUALITY OF JAPANESE QAIL

ABSTRACT This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of initial body weight of gro, ups(above 120g and below 120g) and quantity of feed given (25g and 30g) to Japanese quails on egg laying performance at different periods and also egg storage time (7days, 14days and 2ldays) on egg quality parameters of Japanese quail egg. A total of 120 Japanese quail birds were used at the start of the experiment and were allocated to four groups with respect to their initial body weight at poi...
