Performance and Carcass Quality of Broier Placed on Pro-Vitamin A Cassava and Sweet Cassava-Based Diets

ABSTRACT--- This experiment was carried out to determine the performance and carcass quality of broilers placed on pro-vitamin A cassava and sweet cassava-based diets using maize-based diet as control. The results show that daily weight gain of birds placed on maize-based diet (19.67g) was statistically higher (p0.05) among themselves. The average daily feed intake of the maize- based diets (54.07g/day) was significantly higher (p0.05) between each other. The feed conversion ratio of 2.75...

Pollution and its Effect on Wildlife

Living organisms cannot live by themselves, their interaction with each other balances the nature with all living organisms as well as physical surroundings that forms collectively an environment. Pollution is the introduction of potentially harmful chemical or physical constituents into the environment, in which substances substantially harm individual species metabolisms, or which strongly and rapidly alter a stable historic ecosystem composition (Hogan, 2010). Human has modified the enviro...

Application of Vibration Technique for the Control of Physical Properties of Yam Sprouts (Dioscorea spp.) during Storage in Funaab, Nigeria Environment

Early sprouting of yam tuber is a typical problem during storage resulting into weight losses, deterioration, shrinkage and reduction in quality. This work therefore applied vibration technique for the control of physical properties of yam sprouts (Dioscorea spp.) during storage in FUNAAB, Nigeria Environment. The physical properties (length, number, and weight of yam sprout, number of leaves, weight of roots) of the yam sprouts were determined for one hundred and forty white yam tubers....

Evaluation of Cheese Quality Using Graded Level of Different Plant Extracts as Milk Coagulant

ABSTRACT Cheese was prepared in a small scale at the Department of Agricultural technology Laboratory Kwara State polytechnic Ilorin, Kwara State and analysis of some parameter was carried out on evaluation of cheese quality using graded levels of different plant extracts as coagulant such as C.procera, C.papaya and lime fruit juice. The Parameters analyzed for were, Weight of the cheese, Colour of the cheese, pH of the whey, Time of coagulation, Texture of the cheese Taste of the cheese and...

Economic Importance of Irish Potato

CHAPTER ONE 1.0     INTRODUCTION           Irish potato is also known as (solanum tubersum L) among crops Irish potato contribute significantly to economic development in Nigeria. It is now grown extensively throughout the world and it one of the important agricultural crops, world production reached a record of 320 million tones in 2007 and production in the developing countries has almost doubled since 1991, with a corresponding increase in a consumption (Hoftler and Ochieng ...

Effects of Rhizobium Inoculation and Blended Fertilizer Rate on Yield and Yield Components of Faba Bean (Vicia faba L.) in Dangila District, Northwestern Ethiopia

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is economically an important crop in Ethiopia. The productivity of Faba beanin Ethiopia has been declined due to poor management practices of inappropriate fertilizer rate and Bio fertilizerrates usage. Factorial combination of five rates of Blended fertilizer (0, 60, 121, 180 and 240 kgha-1 NPSZnB) andthree rates of Bio fertilizer (0,500 and 750 gha-1) treatments were laid out in RCBD with three replications. Days to50% flowering, days to 90% physiological maturity,...

Review on effect of Nitrogen and Phosphorous application on seed yield and nutrient uptake of onion (Allium cepa L.)

Onion is a herbaceous biennial monocot cultivated as an annual crop. The number of flowers opening oneach day was influenced by hours of sunlight and concentration of phosphorous (P) and nitrogen (N). Nand P treatments tended to lower bolting percentages. The yield of onion seed per plant increased as thenitrogen in the nutrient solution increased where seed stalks were produced. The effect of early dressingsof N on crops grown under conditions when nights are becoming cooler is shown to allo...

Review on: Effect of seed storage period and storage environment on seed quality

Seed quality deterioration is inevitable process. Since seed is a vital input in agriculture which determines not justthe production but also the productivity, it is crucial to maintain the seed quality as well as seed vigor during the storage. Storageis a basic practice in the control of the physiological quality of the seed and is a method through which the viability of the seedscan be preserved and their vigor kept at a reasonable level during the time between planting and harvesting. Many...

Sustainable Means of Combating Mycotoxins in Grains Used for Livestock

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY All microorganisms are ubiquitous in nature and their interactions with plants, and animals and humans has been recognized for centuries. Some of these interactions are beneficial to the host as in the case of biotransformation such as fermentation and the production of antibiotics. Penicillin, which is one the most famous antibiotics drugs in the world, derived from a common fungus known as Penicillium and it is used to control disease in human and animal population...

Land Use Planning

INTRODUCTION The beauty of agriculture is that every waste product from a sector can be recycled and used for the benefit of another sector, thereby leading to profit maximization and cost minimization. This can also be applicable in fisheries where aquaculture; which is the rearing or farming of economically important aquatic plants and animal in a confined environment is combined with any other form of agriculture like crop science, animal science, soil science amongst others which are cult...

The Application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in Cassava Production In Abia State, Nigeria

Cassava (Manihot esculenta crantz) is a root crop cultivated and consumed as a staple food in most developing world. This research examined the application of principal component analysis (PCA) in Cassava Production In Abia State, Nigeria. PCA is a statistical instrument able to identify the variables explaining most variation within a sample. A multi stage random sampling was used for the purpose of the study. The PCA employed in the analysis have substantially reduced the set of 19 socio-ec...

Environmental Influences on Animal Growth, Welfare And Reproduction

The environment plays a major role in the profitability of any livestock enterprise. Therefore, understanding how each environmental factor affects the growth, welfare and reproduction of animals is very important. When the influence that each environmental factor has on the growth, welfare and reproduction is known, the livestock producer can provide solutions that will mitigate the negative effects of these environmental factors on his livestock. The positive influence of any environmental ...

Sea Horse: A Case Study

INTRODUCTION Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.) are among the many genera whose life histories might render them vulnerable to overfishing or other disruptions such as habitat damage. They are generally characterized by a sparse distribution, low mobility, small home ranges, low fecundity, lengthy parental care and mate fidelity (Foster and Vincent 2004). In addition, the male seahorse, rather than the female, becomes pregnant. Indeed, curiosity about this phenomenon explains why currently more is ...

Risk and benefits of human consumption of raw and pasteurized cow's milk

ABSTRACT In the context of the prevailing trend towards more natural products, there seems to be an increasing preference for raw milk consumption as raw milk is associated with several perceived health benefits that are believed to be destroyed upon heating. However, many human pathogens can be isolated from raw cow’s milk and these pathogens vary from campylobacter to Escherichia coli. The aim of this review is to highlight the risk and benefits related to the consumption of raw and paste...

APPLICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR GENETIC IMPROVEMENT IN FISH FARMING A CASE OF AFRICAN CATFISH Clarias gariepinus

Biotechnology research and development is moving at a very fast rate. In broad terms, Biotechnology can be defined as any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof to make or modify products or processes for specific use. This range from the use of synthetic hormones in induced breeding hybridization, production of monosex, uniparental and polyploid Molecular biology, transgenic fish to gene banking.  CHAPTER ONE 1.0    INTRODUCTION  ...
