Marker Assisted Selection For Post-Flowering Drought Tolerance In Sorghum Bicolor [L.] Moench

ABSTRACT Sorghum is the second most important cereal crop after pearl millet in terms of area planted, production, and per capita consumption in Mali. Production of sorghum is declining due to several reasons including lack of sorghum hybrids and adapted varieties tolerant to drought. Evaluation of sorghum genotypes under different stresses would be useful for identifying genotypes that combine stability with high yield potential for stress-prone areas. The general objective of the study was ...

Genetic Analysis Of Striga Resistance And Low Soil Nitrogen Tolerance In Early Maturing Maize (Zea Mays L.) Inbred Lines

ABSTRACT Striga hermonthica (Del.) and low soil nitrogen (low N) are among the most important constraints to maize production and productivity in West Africa (WA). Knowledge and understanding of the inheritance of Striga resistance and low N tolerance in early maturing maize inbreds are invaluable in developing hybrids adapted to both low N and Striga-infested environments in WA. The objectives of the present study were to (i) assess the genetic diversity among the inbred lines using simple s...

Knowledge Levels Of Farmers And Use Of Integrated Pest Management Practices In Hohoe Municipality

Abstract Although IPM has been advocated as a means of reducing chemical insecticide application, adoption of IPM practices are however, inadequate in the Hohoe Municipality and this may be attributed to a number of socio-economic and institutional factors. The study therefore sought to determine the knowledge levels and use of IPM practices by rice farmers. Survey research design was used for the study. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 120 rice farmers. Both descriptive and ...

Assessing The Growth, Nodulation And Nitrogen Fixing Potential Of Some Multipurpose Trees And Shrubs

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to assess the growth, nodulation and nitrogen fixing potential of some native multipurpose trees and shrubs. A total of fourteen species of indigenous leguminous trees and shrubs were initially screened for nodulation in three Ghanaian soils (Toje, Hatso and Alajo soil series), after 8 weeks of growth in nursery bags. The experiment was repeated with nine species of the tree/shrub legumes, this time under two levels of phosphorus (0 and 60 mg P/kg soil). The ...

Effects Of Maize Variety And Season On Population Dyamics Of Larger Grain Boder, Prostephanus Truncatus And Maize Weevil, And Grain Losses In The Traditional ‘EWE’ Storage Barn In Ghana

ABSTRACT The effects of three maize varieties and two storage seasons on the population dynamics of Prostephanus truncatus and Sitophilus zeamais were observed in the traditional4Ewe’ barn on the field. Two local varieties, Dzolokpuita and Abutia and an improved variety, Abeleehi, were stored with the husk on, during the long season, and Abutia only during the short season, of the 1994/1995 storage period. Destructive sampling techniques were applied to obtain data at monthly intervals for...

Agglomeration Externalities, Productivity And Technical Efficiency Of Soybean Farms In The Upper East And Upper West Regions Of Ghana

ABSTRACT The study set out to identify agglomeration externalities in Ghana’s soybean sector and to assess soybean output elasticities with respect to input-use. The study also analyzed the technical efficiency levels in the soybean sector and the effect of agglomeration externalities on productivity and technical efficiency of soybean farms. The study identifies some components of agglomeration externalities across the soybean sector and defines agglomeration externalities by two indexes;...

Genetic Studies On Salt Tolerance In Rice (O. Sativa) Using Conventional And Molecular Methods

ABSTRACT Niger’s rice production has not been able to match growth in demand. The slow growth in domestic rice production has been attributed to salinity, non-adapted germplasm, and low farmer adoption of improved varieties. This study was carried out to: determine farmers’ perception on influence of salinity in rice production and their preference for rice varieties in salt affected areas; identify potential sources of genes for salt tolerance from local and exotic rice germplasm; determ...

Genetic Analysis Of Drought Tolerance In Cowpea [Vigna Unguiculata (L.) Walp]

ABSTRACT Agriculture in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) is under serious threat due to water shortage, population pressure and climate change. Cowpea, a protein-rich legume crop complements staple cereal and tuber crops in the diets of rural and urban people of the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It therefore, plays a significant role in the sustainability of food and nutrition security in SSA. Cowpea, though reported to be inherently drought tolerant; but because it is mostly grown...

Studies On The Immune Response To Amblyomma Variegatum In Cattle And The Effects Of Haemoparasitism On The Acquisition Of Tick Resistance

ABSTRACT Acaricides in tick control, had been thought to be in Africa the panacea for over a century. Environmental and economic constraints, development of acaricide-resistant strains due to acaricide misuse, have brought about the need for an alternative tick control strategy. The use of tick resistant cattle has then been advocated and echoed in the USA and Australia where it got its full expansion. In Africa, few works have been undertaken on tick resistance despite the fact that many tic...

A Study of Milk Quality And Public Health Hazards in The Smallholder Per-Urban Dairy Marketing System in Ghana

ABSTRACT OF THE STUDY Dairying is a young and developing industry in G hana, and one o f the m ajor problem s it faces is the low dem and o f the m ilk produced. This is partly due to public concerns over the safety and quality o f the m ilk produced, and also the hygienic practices o f informal agents. However, the extent o f risks posed to hum an health by consum ption o f m ilk and dairy products in the country is not well docum ented. This project w as therefore carried out to study the ...

The Use Of Fibre Degrading Enzyme Supplementation In Corn Cob Based Diets For Broilers: Effects On Growth, Blood And Carcass Parameters

ABSTRACT This research was carried out to determine the growth performance, carcass characteristics and selected blood parameters of broilers fed increasing levels of corn cobs (CC) as a replacement (50% or 100%) for wheat bran (WB), with or without fibre degrading enzymes (E). A total of 175 day-old chicks were used in this trial which lasted 42 days. Birds were randomly allotted to five dietary treatments in a completely randomised design. Treatments were labelled as T1 (0% CC), T2 (3% CC),...

Profitability Of Rice Production: A Comparative Analysis Of System Of Rice Intensification And Conventional Method In The Kassena-Nankana East District Of Ghana

ABSTRACT The System of Rice Intensification involves transplanting single, young seedlings in wider spacing and in a square pattern, and an intermittent water application in the field. The conventional method involves broadcasting rice seeds or randomly (or densely) transplanting rice seedlings and flooding the field with water throughout the production season. Rice production in Ghana is primarily done using the conventional method of production. However, the conventional method of rice prod...

The Contribution Of Socio-Economic Factors To Knowledge, Attitude And Skills Acquired Through Training In Pesticide Utilization In The Accra Metropolitan Assembly

ABSTRACT The use of recommended agricultural practices such as the safe adoption of pesticides is influenced by several factors as identified in the evaluative frame of reference. These factors have often led to the existing gap between farmers‘ knowledge and pesticide use. The purpose of the study was to examine the contribution of socio-economic factors to the application of skills acquired through training on the safe use of pesticides in vegetable production in the Accra Metropolitan As...
