Seventy- five arable farmers and 75 pastoralists were randomly and purposively selected respectively, in addition to 50 extension agents. Data were collected using questionnaires and were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics, chi-square analysis and Spearman rho correlation. The results showed that 58.78% and 65.220% of both farmers and extension agents fell within the age brackets of 30-49 y...

PERFORMANCE OF GREEN AMARANTH (Amaranthus hybridus) AS INFLUENCED BY POULTRY MANURE AND INORGANIC NITROGEN RATE.

ABSTRACT  A field trial was conducted during the 2016/2017 dry season at Research and teaching farm of Federal University Dutsinma, Katsina State, in the Sudan Savanna agro-ecological zone of Nigeria to evaluate the influence of different levels of nitrogen and poultry manure on the performance of Amaranthus hybridus. The treatment consist of three levels of nitrogen (0, 40, and 80kg N ha-1) and four levels of poultry manure (0, 5, 10 and 15 t ha-1) arranged in a randomized complete block de...

PERMIT TO WORK SYSTEMS

A permit-to-work system is a formal recorded process used to control work which is identified as potentially hazardous. It is also a means of communication between site/installation management, plant supervisors and operators and those who carry out the hazardous work.

Assessment of Funaab Alpha Broiler Chicken of Genetic Gain For Breast Girth

ABSTRACT This experiment was conducted to estimate and study the genetic gain (ΔG) of FUNAAB Alpha broiler chicken that was selected mainly for breast girth at week 0 to week 10, to provide support for genetic improvement. A total of 200 FUNAAB Alpha broiler chicken were sourced for and fed ad libitum. Data were collected at the end of 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th week; birds/strain was selected from both strains. The initial breast gi...

APPLICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR GENETIC IMPROVEMENT IN FISH FARMING A CASE OF AFRICAN CATFISH Clarias gariepinus

Biotechnology research and development is moving at a very fast rate. In broad terms, Biotechnology can be defined as any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof to make or modify products or processes for specific use. This range from the use of synthetic hormones in induced breeding hybridization, production of monosex, uniparental and polyploid Molecular biology, transgenic fish to gene banking.  CHAPTER ONE 1.0    INTRODUCTION  ...

Effect of cattails (tyha latifolia) invasion on species richness and soil properties.

Cattails (Typha latifolia) are noxious and invading species which are rapidly spread across water bodies. This study aims at determining the distribution and ecological effects of cattail on invaded ecosystems in Kwara State. Survey was made across the wetlands in the sixteen Local Government Areas in Kwara State. Out of these, wetlands of eight Local Government were selected due to the prevalence of cattails in them. Each location with cattail distribution was divided into three subplots whi...

Mineralogy of clay components of Aquic Arenic Paleudults soils of Akpamkpa, Southeastern Nigeria

Background and Objective: Aquic Arenic Paleudults soils are developed at valley bottom of a basement complex parent material of the sub-humid tropical rainforest. The aim of the study was to determine the mineralogy of clay components of Aquic Arenic Paleudults soils of Akpamkpa, Southeastern Nigeria. Materials and Methods: The study mineralogy of clay components of Aquic Arenic Paleudults soils of Akamkpa, southeastern Nigeria was carried out on 50 hectare land. Two soils were collected fro...

Predictive Mapping of Soil Properties for Precision Agriculture Using Geographic Information System (GIS) Based Geostatistics Models

In precision Agriculture, geostatistical methods as a predictive tool have been extensively utilized. The approach estimates soil properties spatial variability and dependency. This study was carried out in Ovia north east Local Government Area of Edo State of Nigeria in order to map soil properties (Sand, Clay, pH, OC, P, N and CEC) and predict their spatial variability. Twenty-nine (29) soil samples were collected randomly from Typic Kandiudults soil type under three different land use, tea...

Influence of rock dust-based soil re- mineralisation on root-knot disease of organic watermelon plants

Deplorable soil fertility characterising resource-poor agrarian communities remain a major constraint for sustainable global food security. Re-mineralisation through appli- cation of rock dust encourages maintainable productivity of degraded soils. This study was planned to appraise the effect of rock dust on root-knot disease of Citrullus lanatus caused by Meloidogyne incognita (Mi). The experiment was laid out in Randomised Complete Block Design with three replications. Soil and root popula...

RESPONSE OF GROWING RABBITS (ORYCTOLAGUS CUNICULUS) FED DIETS CONTAINING RAW TALLOW (DETARIUM MICROCARPUM) SEED MEAL

A 12-week study was conducted to determine the effect of graded levels of raw tallow seed meal (RTSM) on growth performance, haematological and biochemical parameters and organoleptic qualities of growing rabbits. Five experimental diets were compounded to contain 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% RTSM replacing the palm kernel cake weight for the weight designated as T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5, respectively. Forty-five (45) weaned rabbits between 5 and 6 weeks with an average body weight ranging from 500 to...
