ABSTRACT Twenty-six wound healing plants have been identified in the Kpando Traditional Area in Ghana. The methanol extracts of six of these plants showed some level of antimicrobial activity against wound causing infectious microorganisms. Similarly, four of these plants exhibited significant wound healing properties. Free radical scavenging activity by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH) indicated a concentration dependent activity with no significant difference from Ascorbic aci...
ABSTRACT The roots of Cryplo/epis sangllino/Cllla have been investigated for their chemical compounds since 1931. But so far, not much has been reported on the stem although they are used in traditional medicine in Ghana. OJ'plo/cpis sallgllino/enla (Lind.) Schlechter (family Periplocaceae) is a medicinal plant used in some African countries against infectious and parasitic diseases. Phytochcmical $creening of the extracts from the stem (bark and wood) of Oyplo/epis sangliino/Cllla revealed t...
ABSTRACT The dissertation was on Time Series Analysis of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Ghana for the period 1964 to 2009. The main objective of the study was to determine the general trend pattern and to develop a model for forecasting the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the old and new series. In order to achieve these objectives, CPI figures for the period were obtained from the prices section of Ghana Statistical Service. The major statistical software used to analyze the data was the M...
ABSTRACT The focus of this study was to investigate the computer proficiency of students and the effect to which its integration will affect instruction. It also determined if there exist significant difference in the mean score between students in the experimental group and control group on the post-test. The study used Technological Pedagogical Knowledge Framework by Mishra and Koehler (2006) as the conceptual base. The population was composed of 120 junior high school pupils of JHS two (2)...
ABSTRACT In radiation therapy, the traditional way of providing accuracy of megavoltage radiation treatment fields, is by the use of portal radiographs. In these radiographs the film detector is positioned at the exist point of the beam beside the patient and details of its anatomical parts located within the field borders are taken. There is poor visualization of landmarks in portal films due to the high energy of photons used for treatment. Due to this draw-back, an electronic portal imagin...
ABSTRACT. The evolution of extrusion into cereal processing has widened the available assortment of puffed snack foods and ready-to-eat (RTE) breakfast cereal formulations. In producing these nutritious products, cereals can be fortified with pulse proteins, as these legumes are important sources of food proteins and other nutrients. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used in investigating the effects of 3 process variables (viz. Cowpea level, groundnut level and feed moisture) on pr...
ABSTRACT GLURP and MSP3 are targets for antibodies involved in antibody-dependent cellular inhibition that may lead to protective immunity against malaria. Comparative assessment of IgG and subclass responses to GLURP and MSP3 in relation to immunity against malaria will provide relevant information that will be useful in future malaria vaccine development. Several studies have led to the recent recognition of the importance of T- cell in the generation of long-term antibody responses in...
ABSTRACT This study compares the performances of ARIMA, ARCH, GARCH, EGARCH and GJR-GARCH on their abilities in modelling and forecasting the volatility of world cocoa bean prices on the London Intercontinental Futures Exchange using weekly averages of prices in Great Britain Pounds from January 1985 through December 2017. It seeks to ascertain whether a model that provides a good in-sample fit necessarily provide the best out-of-sample forecast, in the midst of other models. A number...
ABSTRACT Background: Outbreaks of Cerebrospinal meningitis, which occur seasonally and periodically continue to be a burden in the African meningitis belt in spite of improved control and preventive mechanisms. Although, immunoprophylaxis remains the most effective strategy to manage meningococcal meningitis, early detection of the causative pathogen could improve the prognosis. However, Hospital (Case) Based Surveillance System (HBSS) is limited at providing information (lags-in-time) on th...
ABSTRACT A revision of the Afrotropical members of the subgenus Uresipedilum Sasa et Kikuchi, 1995 showed that most of the earlier species were misidentified. Ten new Afrotropical species are identified and described: P. (U.) spinibojum sp. n., P. (U.) plautum sp. n., P. (U.) lehmanni sp. n., P. (U.) praegnans sp. n., P. (U.) hanisoni sp. n., P. (U.) freemani sp. n.,P. (£/.) dossenudum sp. n., P. (U.) acutulum sp. n., P. (U.) kakumense sp. n., and P. (t/.) gladysae sp. n. Two species, P....
ABSTRACT Tuberculosis (TB) still remains a major global health problem particularly in resourcelimited settings despite the availability of treatment regimen for decades. Although two pathogens, Mycobacterium tuberculosis sensu stricto (MTBss) and Mycobacterium africanum (Maf) are responsible for TB incidence in humans, more research attention has been accorded MTBss to the neglect of Maf, which is reported to be geographically restricted to West Africa and its immigrants. This thesis s...
Abstract Search for alternative materials required for shielding ionizing radiation has being on the increase for some period of time. Lead which is widely used is expensive, therefore researches has to be carried out on other materials. Clay has been suggested but it is not as effective as lead in shielding ionizing radiation. This work therefore studies the compression of clay samples at different pressures and thicknesses, so as to improve its shielding ability in the attenuation of ioniz...
ABSTRACT With the increasing number of the aged in Ghana, social support for this segment of the population is gradually becoming an issue of great concern. There is debt of research on this. This study is therefore an attempt to provide some information for policy makers towards enhancing planning of better health, social financial support services for the aged to promote their well-being. The descriptive and explanatory survey designs were employed to achieve the objective of the research....
ABSTRACT The root bark of the plant Turraea heterophylla belonging to the family Meliaceae was investigated for its chemical constituents. Phytochemical screening of both the methanolic and methylene chloride extracts indicated the presence of tannins, saponnins, terpenes, steroids and about eight different limonoids. Exhaustive extraction, chromatography and spectral analyses led to isolation of three compounds. The spectrometric analyses and the resulting data - including IR, NMR(H-H COSY a...
ABSTRACT Many infectious diseases including malaria are preventable, yet they remain endemic in many communities due to lack of proper, adequate and timely control policies. Strategies for controlling the spread of any infectious disease include a rapid reduction in both the infected and susceptible populations. (if a cure is available) as well as a rapid reduction in the susceptible class if a vaccine is available. For diseases like malaria where there is no vaccine, it is still possible to ...
