ABSTRACT Allozyme variation in protein encoded at 22 loci was studied in 9 cowpea accessions from three agroecological zones of Ghana (namely Deciduous forest, Guinea savannah and Sudan savannah) by electrophoresis. In addition, variation in thirteen morphological agronomic traits of the accessions were studied. The results indicated that: (i) 21 out of 22 loci were polymorphic (95.5%); (ii) cowpea accessions displayed average estimates of mean alleles per locus, A = 5.00; mean expected hete...
ABSTRACT The study examined spatial dimensions of care for people living with HIV/AIDS in New Juaben and Manya Krobo Districts. Both qualitative and quantitative data were used. The research instruments included closed and open ended questionnaire as well as interview schedules and personal observation. High prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS, limited care centres, and lack of financial and logistical support as well as stigmatization and discrimination were the major problems that necessitated this...
ABSTRACT Loan default is one of the major problems facing most financial institutions. The solution to this problem has been the use of a mathematical model to determine the probability of default of clients of these financial institutions. This study proposes a mathematical model for predicting the probability of default of clients from a microfinance institution. The logistic and survival analysis methods were used in building the model. The results from the logistic regression model showed...
ABSTRACT A DOAS system has been developed and deployed to determine horizontal concentrations of such pollutants as NO2, SO2 and O3 in Bologna, Italy and Tema, Ghana. Measurements were conducted in Italy during the winter season of March 2005 and in Ghana during the dry harmattan season in January 2008 and raining seasons in July and August 2008. Their average lineof-sight concentrations were determined by measuring the scattered solar radiation through three optical windows in the zenith and...
ABSTRACT The objective of this study has been to determine the major underlying factors that influence the choice of senior high schools. To this end, a survey of 510 BECE candidates in Junior High Schools in Nungua, a community in Accra, was conducted. The students were asked to indicate their opinions on twenty seven variables on a five-point Likert scale. The data generated from the survey were multivariate in structure since 27 variables were recorded on 510 respondents. Factor analysis, ...
ABSTRACT A simple fibre optical design for reflectance measurements of plane surfaces has been developed and tested. The reflectance system was standardized with a PF10-03-P01-Plane mirror. Average reflectance from the plane mirror was 99.7%, 99.5% and 70.0% for the 1310 nm, 850 nm LED sources and 632.8 nm He-Ne laser respectively. Average reflectance decreased with decreasing wavelength. Steel and aluminium metal plates showed different trends in average reflectance values. The microscope sl...
ABSTRACT This thesis examined the changes in land use in the Akwapim South District where agriculture has undergone significant changes since the 1930s when cocoa farms were destroyed as a result of the invasion of swollen shoot disease. The methodological approach explored Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as tools for investigating the phenomenon. Aerial photographs of 1972/74 and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite images of 1985 and 1991 supported the analysi...
ABSTRACT The study was conducted to establish the level of ICT usage among teachers and students in the teaching and learning of mathematics in senior high school in the Greater Accra region. To carry out such a research entails a careful study of what others have done and what also pertains on the ground. To achieve this, a thorough review of literature was carried out and questionnaire was used to solicit information from 300 respondents (250 students and 50 teachers) who were selected from...
ABSTRACT Location of fuel stations are regulated by planning principles and standards. However, despite efforts of regulators to ensure that fuel stations are well sited for the safety of lives and properties, entrepreneurs continue to disregard the national standards of siting fuel stations to locate such stations anywhere they find especially in urban areas. This study assessed the locational of fuel stations in Sunyani Municipality. The crosssection research design with mixed method techni...
ABSTRACT The supply of potable water to the home is vital because water is a prerequisite for existence. Due to the growing scarcity of fresh water which is a result of increased needs for water, management becomes the essential component needed to ensure its sufficient and continuous supply. The Ga West Municipality faces the problem of inadequate potable water supply hence the need to manage the water resources available to them. The study was conducted to assess the mode of obtaining potab...
ABSTRACT The study was carried out with primary 6 pupils at Assin Fosu demonstration school. This study looked at the comparative analysis of the performance of pupils who were taught multiplication of fractions using an interactive multimedia courseware and those who were taught using the traditional method of teaching. Visual Basic 6.0 and TechSmith Camtasia Studio v5.0.2 software were used to develop the interactive multimedia courseware on multiplication of fractions. An achievement test ...
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many individuals and organisations have contributed in diverse ways to the successful completion of this study. It is prudent to extend my gratitude to such individuals and organisations. I ,vish to place on record the contributions of my supervisors, Professors Kofi Awusabo-Asare and Albert Machistey Abane. These two individuals ,viII be remembered for their constructive criticisms which shaped this work to its present fonn. They are my role models and they really inspired m...
ABSTRACT The movement of contaminated fluid from a solid waste landfill into a portable water aquifer located beneath is an example of unwanted underground flow. With the problem of limited portion of land available for building construction in the cities, coupled with the rise in price of good and accessible land, there IS a need for. quick and urgent solutions to environmental pollution that may be resulted from this problem In this research, a laboratory setup consisting of a big transpare...
ABSTRACT Acid phosphatase (ACP) activity was demonstrated in blood stream form of Trypanosome brucei brucei harvested from infected Wister rats by Ion Exchange DEAE Cellulose 52 chromatography. Whole parasite extract (WPE) and Excretory Secretory Extract (ESE) were prepared and analyzed for acid phosphatase activity. A higher ACP activity (85.5 µmol/min) was recorded in WPE compared to ESE (36.8 µmol/min). ACP activity in ESE is suggestive of the presence of a cell rich enzyme. Phase separ...
ABSTRACT Incinerator ash was investigated for its potential use as a replacement for sand and cement in concrete interlocking bricks. The physical characteristics of the raw materials were examined. Two sets of mixes were prepared. For the first set, sand and water quantities were fixed while incinerator ash was used at 0% to 100% replacement by weight for cement in steps of 10%. In the second set, incinerator ash was used at 0% to 100% replacement by weight for sand while cement and water q...
