ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae

Background: Resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins among Enterobacteriaceae has been reported yet they serve as the last line treatment for severe infections in Uganda and other countries. This resistance often leads to nosocomial infection outbreaks and therapeutic failures from multidrug resistant bacteria. The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae in clinical samples of patients in variou...

Purification and characterization of rhodanese from sprouted maize

Rhodanese, a cyanide detoxifying enzyme, was isolated and partially purified from malted maize (Zea  mays) using 85% ammonium sulphate precipitation and ion-exchange chromatography on CM- Sephadex C-25. The specific activity of the enzyme obtained was 5.07RU/mg protein with a yield of  9.6% and purification fold of 2.13. The Michaelis constant (Km) values of the substrates sodium  thiolsulphate (Na2S2O3) and potassium cyanide (KCN) were 80 mM and 300mM while their Vmax were  4.86 RU/ml/mi...

A review of documented findings on Text Summarization for Children news rendering

News rendering involves the representation of News in a suitable and usable manner essentially for better understanding. Over the years there has been severe interest in the ways by which this representation is being formulated. These concerns are majorly issues around the target audience especially children. Many approaches to re-render news objects to children have failed as they alter the semantics of the body of the contents. The difficulty has been a gap that necessitated the study. We ...

Computational Methods in Historical Research

The Humanities primarily deal with the human condition and its various manifestations and dimensions. Now, the human experience is rich, diverse and complex. It involves the whole human experience from the distant pre-historic past when man used to live in the cave until the present day where he now goes to space and is technologically advanced. The arts and humanities basically analyze the human phenomenon and in the process of doing this, there is a need for the scientific methodology.  ...

Phenolics Comparison between Twinning and Celestial Peppermint Teas using HPLC-DAD

Abstract Twinings and Celestial pure peppermint herbal tea is made from 100% select peppermint leaves and is naturally caffeine and gluten-free and parts of their differences lie in the packaging. The HPLC profile of Twinning peppermint and celestial peppermint teas showed that both the teas samples contain caffeic acid, ellagic acid, pcoumaric acid, rosmarinic acid and rutin while celestial peppermint tea had an extra phenolic compound called quercetin. Quercetin was known for its anti-i...

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES OF FLOURS FROM THREE VARIETIES OF SWEET POTATO (Ipomoeas batatas) ROOTS

ABSTRACT This study was undertaken to assess the functional properties of flours from three varieties of sweet potato (Ipomoeas batatas). The varieties used in this study include orange flesh sweet potato – ‘Umuspo – 3 (Mother’s Delight)’, cream flesh sweet potato – ‘Ex-igbarium’ and red skin-white flesh sweet potato varieties. The functional properties analysed include Swelling power, Water absorption capacity, Oil absorption capacity, Bulk density and least gelation capacity...

Amylase Production by Solid State Fermentation of Corn (Zea Mays) Stem Using Fusarium and Mucor

Abstract The study aimed at producing amylase from corn stem using Mucor and Fusarium in solid state fermentation. The Fungi used in this study were isolated from the rhizosphere of the corn plant. Solid state technique was adopted for the fermentation process using spore suspension as inoculum. Various fermentation parameters such as  incubation days, addition of salt supplement, substrate concentration, mycelia suspension and temperature were optimized during fermentation with these organ...

Quorum sensing in rhizobia isolated from various leguminous plants

Quorum sensing of rhizobacteria checked against various chemicals including amino acids, sugar , sugar alcohol , salts .

Disease Diagnostic Techniques Of Contemporary Times In Nigeria

Diagnosis of parasitic diseases are globally important requisite to realization of wholesome treatment of ailment and reduction in resultant morbidities and mortalities. Parasitic diseases are however hyper- and hypo-prevalent in Nigerian populace often due to socioeconomics factors and ranges of little or no sequels. Low mortality from parasitic infection is due to alternative medication other than successful diagnosis as observed. Subsidizing cost of affording diagnosis, erection of governm...

Importance of computer and information science

COMPUTER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Over the years computer has been useful to modern day technology. Computer science and technology is one of the fastest career in modern day, this have improved humans beyond immeasurable doubts. Computer science and technology have developed through mechanical and electrical engineering technology with the basis of mathematical language analysis. For example earliest computers were bassically mechanically oriented but modern day computer have become more elect...

THE IMPORTANCE OF USING RADIOTRACER IN DIAGNOSING CANCER Review

Abstract Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty that allows modern diagnostics and treatments cancer using radiopharmaceuticals original radiotracers (drugs linked to a radioactive isotope).  Radiopharmaceuticals are considered a special group of drugs and thus their preparation and use are regulated by a set of policies that have been adopted by individual member of countries. The radiopharmaceuticals used in diagnostic examinations are administered in very small doses. So, in general, t...

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF PERMENEMT MAGNET FREE ENERGY GENERATOR RESEARCH PAPER

ABSTRACT  A drastic change in the perception of electric energy . But at the same time there is misreading of FREE ENERGY. Energy becomes free only at a point after which we don’t have to pay for power generation after hiring the unit. By using the magnetic force of magnets continuous motion (Energy) is made. This magnet also produces a magnetic field, so both the magnetic fields repel each other (like poles repel), which reasons the fins to move. The free Energy Generator was mounted ins...

Mycotoxins Food Production and Exportation in Nigeria

ABSTRACT  Mycotoxins are low-molecular weight secondary metabolites produced by fungi, mostly of the phyla Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. They are noncritical to the instantaneous survival of the organism, and mostly affect its long-term survival. Fungal growth is enhanced by the warm, humid atmosphere and organic substrate-rich soil, such as exists in Nigeria, and they massively infect Nigerian plants and livestock. One consequence is reduced agricultural yield, which leads to food short...
