Purification and characterization of rhodanese from sprouted maize

Rhodanese, a cyanide detoxifying enzyme, was isolated and partially purified from malted maize (Zea  mays) using 85% ammonium sulphate precipitation and ion-exchange chromatography on CM- Sephadex C-25. The specific activity of the enzyme obtained was 5.07RU/mg protein with a yield of  9.6% and purification fold of 2.13. The Michaelis constant (Km) values of the substrates sodium  thiolsulphate (Na2S2O3) and potassium cyanide (KCN) were 80 mM and 300mM while their Vmax were  4.86 RU/ml/mi...

ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF Aeromonas spp FROM POND WATER AND FISHES IN ILE-IFE OSUN STATE, NIGERIA.

ABSTRACT The study was carried out to isolate, characterize and investigate the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Aeromonas species isolated from pond water and fish samples at Sabo and Iloro pond sites in Ile-Ife, Osun State.  Physicochemical parameters of the water samples such as pH, temperature, total dissolved solid (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) were determined using standard methods. Aeromonas species was isolated by the spread plate technique for ...

A review of documented findings on Text Summarization for Children news rendering

News rendering involves the representation of News in a suitable and usable manner essentially for better understanding. Over the years there has been severe interest in the ways by which this representation is being formulated. These concerns are majorly issues around the target audience especially children. Many approaches to re-render news objects to children have failed as they alter the semantics of the body of the contents. The difficulty has been a gap that necessitated the study. We ...

Essentials of Microbiology in Forensic Medicine

ABSTRACT Forensic microbiology as an evolving field in forensic medicine, is a scientific discipline dedicated to analyzing evidence from a bioterrorism act, biocrime through the study of microorganisms in order to determine the path of an outbreak, the identity of a criminal or the origin of a particular strain of biological weapon or contagion (Budowle et al., 2006). The involvement of microbiology in forensic medicine is known as “microbial forensics” and its processings ...

PREVALENCE OF METHICILLINE RESISTANCE Staphylococcus aureus FROM THE GASTRO ORIGINAL

Prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from the surface of cockroaches found in the university of Lagos

The effects of cement dust on Amaranthus Viridis.

ABSTRACT The   experiment   was   carried   out   to   investigate   the   effect   of   cement   dust   pollution   onAmaranthus viridis in respect to growth, heavy metal uptake and the plant in general. Loamysoil was polluted with Dangote cement in a ratio of (100:1). It was observed that the presenceof cement dust in the polluted soil did not affect the germination time of the plant. Upongrowing the Amaranthus plant were polluted with 10.2gcement dust at 3datys in...

The potential protective effects of Diphenyl-diselenide (PhSe)2 on Mercuric chloride-Induced Nephrotoxicity in female wistar rats

ABSTRACT  Evidences have implicated free radicals or reactive oxygen species in mercuric chloride-induced nephrotoxicity. Diphenyl diselenide (PhSe)2, a simple and stable organoselenium compound, has been proposed as a good candidate for pharmacological and therapeutic purposes. This particular study was designed to investigate the protective effect of (PhSe)2 against mercuric chloride-induced nephrotoxicity.  In this study, 44 female Wistar rats with weights ranging from 125g and 180g were...

Computational Methods in Historical Research

The Humanities primarily deal with the human condition and its various manifestations and dimensions. Now, the human experience is rich, diverse and complex. It involves the whole human experience from the distant pre-historic past when man used to live in the cave until the present day where he now goes to space and is technologically advanced. The arts and humanities basically analyze the human phenomenon and in the process of doing this, there is a need for the scientific methodology.  ...

Global Smartphone Ownership, Internet Usage and It's Impacts on Humans

ABSTRACT Smartphones are nowadays becoming more acceptable due to many features it offers as compared to traditional  mobile phones due to the clamor for a portable and faster means of communication. The rate at which the device  is being acquired has resulted in significant increase in the number of mobile phone subscribers globally.  Therefore, there is a need to ascertain the rate of smartphone acquisition and its effect on the number of people  accessing the internet and the resultant...

Improvement of the Physicochemical and Microbiological Quality of the Date’s Fruit Product in South Algeria by Adding Rosemary Herb

The dates are used to prepare several food products, among which the Btana is a best conservation form commonly practiced in the South-west area of Algeria. The peasants add during its preparation one or more aromatic herbs according to the choice and the areas. The present research aims relates to the study of the effectiveness of the methods used from the microbiological quality point of view and the determination of the effect of the plants added during the Btana preparations, for that...

Generation of bioethanol from common date by-products, “Teggaza and Lebghel” in Southern Algeria

Date by-products constitute the principal food for the oasis populations in Middle East and North Africa. Dates contents consist of 70 to 80% of reducing sugars, and do not require an intensive energy and labour for thermophysical pre-treatment. They can serve as a good feedstock for bioethanol generation through fermentation and distillation. Algeria is among the top sixth producers of dates in the world with more than 250,000 tons/year; from these, more than 30% can be lost for dif...

Phenolics Comparison between Twinning and Celestial Peppermint Teas using HPLC-DAD

Abstract Twinings and Celestial pure peppermint herbal tea is made from 100% select peppermint leaves and is naturally caffeine and gluten-free and parts of their differences lie in the packaging. The HPLC profile of Twinning peppermint and celestial peppermint teas showed that both the teas samples contain caffeic acid, ellagic acid, pcoumaric acid, rosmarinic acid and rutin while celestial peppermint tea had an extra phenolic compound called quercetin. Quercetin was known for its anti-i...

ACTIVATION OF CASPASE ACTIVITY IN RAT LIVER CELLS BY METHANOL EXTRACT OF GLORIOSA SUPERBA

Activation of caspase 3&9 by methanol extract of Gloriosa superba  ABSTRACT Mitochondrion is the key regulator in cellular energy homeostasis and plays a central role in determining cell apoptotic process; it is therefore regarded as a vital target for cancer chemotherapy. Cancer is obviously one of the most common areas where demand for alternative treatment is overwhelming. Many investigations revealed that bioactive compounds in natural products can act on mitochondria to trigger the per...

Caspase activation by methanol extract of Gloriosa superba on rat liver cells

Methanol extract of Gloriosa superba in this research was adopted due to the presence of photochemicals present in the plant. This photochemicals are known to act as antioxidants and anti tumor agent but it is not yet known if the activity of the plant is through the mitochondria mediated pathway, caspase activation and induction of apoptosis where up regulation is necessary
