Preliminary Investigation of the Possible Pathogenic Bacterial Contents of Some Local Non-Alcoholic Drinks

The aim of this study was to determine the safety profiles of some local non-alcoholic drinks sold within Zaria locality by isolating and characterizing the possible pathogenic bacteria found in them. For this aim, 17 samples of Zobo drink, 19 samples of Kunu zaki drink, and 15 samples of Ginger drink were analysed. Among the 51 total samples, Klebsiella pneumoniae was isolated from one Ginger drink sample; Serratia marcescens was  isolated from two Zobo drink samples and two Ginger drink s...

LEACHATE COMPOSITION OF ISALE-IJAGBA AND OKE –DIYA DUMPSITES IN SAGAMU AND THE POSSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON SURFACE AND GROUNDWATER QUALITY.

ABSTRACT When solid waste is disposed of at landfills, it undergoes a combination of physical, chemical and microbial processes. These processes help to transform the waste into various water-soluble compounds termed (leachate) and transfer the pollutants from the refuse to the percolating water, leading to contamination of surrounding groundwater and surface water. Characterisations of the leachate originating from the Isale-Ijagba and Oke-Diya dumpsites (situated in Sagamu, Ogun State, Nig...

Physico-chemical Properties of Cocoyam Flour

ABSTRACT This work examined the physicochemical properties of cocoyam flour. Cocoyam corms were cleaned, peeled, diced, blanched, sundried, milled and sieved to obtain flour of fine particle sizes. Physical properties and chemical composition of the flour were determined in accordance with standard methods. The results of the physical properties ranged from oil absorption capacity 2.96 g/ml, water absorption capacity 3 g/ml, gelatinization temperature 68oC, least gelation capacity 0.4 g/ml,...

Prevalence of Hepatitis B serological markers among HIV infected patients

Abstract Abstract Background: Occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) is defined as serologically undetectable hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg-ve), despite the presence of circulating HBV DNA (Allain, 2005). It has been documented that one of the frequent complications of HIV infection is hepatitis B co-infection and due to the common methods of transmission of these two viruses, the incidence rate of co-infection is increasing (Chen et al., 2011) Objective: To determine the prevalence of HBV s...

Assessment of Alpha and Beta Radioactivity Pollution of Main Water Supplies in Dutsinma Metropolis

ABSTRACT The gross alpha and beta radioactivity pollution of main water supplies in Dutsinma metropolis were measured using proportional gas counter. The results show that the gross alpha radioactivity in water samples is lower than the maximum contaminant level of 0.1Bq/L set by World Health Organization (WHO). The measured alpha activities have a minimum of 0.001±0.0.003 and the maximum of 0.146±0.034 Bq/L with mean of 0.029±0.002 Bq/L. The gross beta radioactivity in water samples is h...

Investigating The Presence Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Escherichia Coli In Dairy Products

INTRODUCTION Dairy products are various products derived from cow’s milk or that of other female mammals such as goat, sheep, yaks, horses, camel. Dairy products include yoghurt, nono (fermented cow’s milk, madara (unfermented cow’s milk, cheese, whey, condensed and evaporated milk.) (cultureforhealth, 2015). Yoghurt, nono, Madara has become so highly valued in humans diet because of their nutritional values and their culinary possibilities (George and pamplon, 2006) Yoghurt is ma...

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE

Open-Source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose. Open-source software may be developed in a collaborative public manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open-content movements. The open-...

Lupus Outbreak in Nigeria

Systemic lupus erthematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which tissues andcells undergo damage mediated by tissue binding auto-antibodies and immune complexes(McGraw, 2005).General findings include a much higher incidence in women estimated to be up to10-12 times than in men. The highest incidence is between 15 and 44 years of  age.(Academic press, 1999)  It, therefore, means that as much as ninety percent of patientsare women of childbearing age. Incidence of SLE has been studied in g...

SIXTH SENSE TECHNOLOGY

Sixth Sense Technology is a mini-projector coupled with a camera and a cell phone—which acts as the computer and connected to the Cloud, all the information stored on the web. Sixth Sense can also obey hand gestures. The camera recognizes objects around a person instantly, with the micro-projector overlaying the information on any surface, including the object itself or hand.

PARASITIC COMPUTING

Parasitic computing is programming technique where a program in normal authorized interactions with another program manages to get the other program to perform computations of a complex nature. It is, in a sense, a security exploit in that the program implementing the parasitic computing has no authority to consume resources made available to the other program. The example given by the original paper was two computers communicating over the Internet, under disguise of a standard communication...

Application of Nented Design on the Effect of Feeds and Seasonal Variation on Dairy Milk Yield (A Case Study of Napri Shika, ABU Zaria)

ABSTRACT The present study was conducted at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of feeds (cotton seed cake, yeast supplement, cow milking ration) and seasonal variation (dry and rainy season) on dairy milk yield. A total of 21 mid lactation cows were fed with cotton seed cake, yeast supplement and cow milking ration in the two seasons respectively   and   the   volume   of   milk   produced   by   each   cow   was  recorded  ...

A genetic model for Test Data Generation

The use of metaheuristic search technique for generation of test data has been a burgeoning interest for many researchers in recent times. There has been a previous attempt to automate the test data generation process has been limited, having been constrained by the size and complexity of software, and the fundamental facts that in totality test data generation is an undecideable problem. Metaheuristic search technique is high level frameworks, which utilizes heuristic to seek solution for co...
